Tour of the haberts via Aliénard

A peaceful hike from La Ruchère, at the foot of the Grand and Petit Som, along the paths of the haberts (shepherds' shelters). Autumn is a particularly good time to visit, with the colours of the beech trees and the sun flooding the few meadows you cross: Billon, Arpison, etc.

Be careful at the end of the route, however, as there is a slightly steep path that may slow down inexperienced hikers (or in specific conditions, such as snow, rain, fallen trees, etc.). See comments.

Description of the walk

Park in the first car park on the right, on the cul-de-sac that leads off the road going up to the ski centre, near the 'Le Cleyat' lodge.

(S/E) Start on the forest road that climbs immediately from the car park, without going as far as the large building a little further on. When you reach a wood storage area, continue for about 50 metres.

(1) Continue straight ahead on the path that continues to climb south towards Col de la Ruchère. Join the GR®9 a little before the pass.

(2) Head right, north-west then north.

(3) After going around the spur, leave the GR®9 and continue on the path that heads south-west towards Aliénard. Reach the pass of the same name: view to the east of the two Som peaks, Petit and Grand, and the ruins of a habert (shepherd's shelter), evidence of past activity.

(4) Continue southwards to reach the magnificent Habert de Billon, still almost intact, not far from the Grande Chartreuse monastery.

(5) Take the path that heads south-west just above the main building and then climbs north and west before arriving at the Col d'Arpison.

(6) Descend towards the meadow and take the time to make a short detour to discover this beautiful spot, particularly popular in winter for cross-country skiing, after climbing the "Noire" from the Ruchère fireplace.

(7) Pick up the trail at the fork northeast of the meadow, which plunges downhill due north. There are several tracks, but if you keep heading north, they will take you back to the car park at the end of the road coming from La Ruchère.

(8) Cross the car park and turn right immediately after a stream to follow the path heading east towards the Nordic Centre.

(9) Once on the ridge, the trail descends slightly south-east to join the GR®9, which you follow to the left, to a place called Le Cerney. You will arrive at the foot of a small cliff.

(10) Leave the GR® and stay on the path that branches off to the right, running horizontally under the cliff to go around it. Once you have gone around the ridge, this path descends rapidly via a series of hairpin bends and returns to the starting point just above the wood storage area.

(1) Turn left to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

There are no difficulties on this well-marked route, but avoid the last junction between the GR® and the car park if there is snow on the ground. In this case, finish on the GR® to the ski lodge and return via the road below.

Water point before arriving at Col d'Aliénard (4), spring and trough for animals on the left as you climb.

Nice hike, but as mentioned, point 10 is tricky, so those prone to vertigo should refrain. There are many tree trunks across the path, so be careful when walking in autumn as leaves can hide roots or other surprises. I think that if this part is not maintained, it will become impassable, which is a shame because the hike is enjoyable.

First of all, it was a very beautiful hike, but several points raise questions for me.
It is not an easy hike as indicated.
There are some difficulties on a poorly marked or badly marked route, especially at points 3 and 9.
The return from point 10 is not recommended for inexperienced hikers: it is tricky and exposed.
I wanted to check out this hike because I accompany groups and I think I did the right thing. Among other things, I would keep the GR for the last part.
Thank you

This route is mainly used for the first part; the second part is much less popular.
This route can be done in winter with snowshoes. A marked snowshoe route leads from the cross-country skiing centre to the Arpison viewpoint.

A lovely, well-described walk done on 1 November. However, there is one criticism in the description at point 10 about the path that goes around the cliff. This path is very slippery and on 1 November it was largely hidden under leaves that concealed the stones there. In addition, several trees have fallen across the path and are not always easy to get past. In the practical information, you do mention to avoid this section in case of snow on the ground, but it would be good to emphasise in the description that this path is exposed and should be taken with caution over a relatively long distance.
