When arriving in Buoux via Lourmarin or Bonnieux, there is a visitor car park at the exit of the village on the right, below the road.
(S/E) From the car park, go back up the RD 113 and cross the village to the left. At the exit, a signpost marked "Escoufines 466 m" indicates Sivergues/Les Ramades via a path that descends to the left. Take this path and rejoin the road a little further down.
Continue a few metres along the road to cross the Loube stream.
(1) Continue on the right, walking along the RD 113. Soon, you will begin to see part of the Buoux cliffs on your left, as well as the promontory where the ruined fort of Buoux is located.
After a sharp left turn, the road comes to an intersection with Route des Seguins.
(2) Take this road on the left, passing between a few abandoned and graffitied buildings that mar the entrance to this site. After a bridge, enter the car park below on the left.
Cross it and walk along the Aiguebrun for about a hundred metres on the left bank until you reach a small footbridge that crosses the stream.
Go up a small path on the right. Cross a small road and reach a car park on the left above the road. At the end of the car park, a slightly steep path through the vegetation leads to a track.
(3) You are now on the GR®9 (red and white markings). Follow the track up to the right.
After a few metres, pass under the impressive overhanging cliff called Baume du Fort (there is a small information sign).
Continue along the track and, at the next bend, you will arrive at the foot of the entrance to Fort de Buoux (see the practical information section for details of a possible visit).
Continue on the right along the track, which now narrows and becomes steeper as it enters the forest. After a few bends, look out for a path on your left in the middle of a straight line.
(4) Leave the GR® and turn left onto this unmarked path.
After a few metres of climbing, you will be overlooking the valley you have just climbed.
The path then enters the woods, where a few small gaps in the trees offer views of the surrounding peaks and Mont Ventoux in the distance.
When the path begins to climb again at the foot of a rock face on the left, take a sharp left turn and after a few hairpin bends you will reach a small pass at the altitude of 614 m on the IGN map.
(5) Continue straight ahead on the other side, which offers a slightly clearer view of Mont Ventoux and the Monts de Vaucluse and, at times, the top of the Buoux cliffs.
Reach the top of the Ravin de l'Enfer, where there is a house leaning against the mountain. Go around it on the left via a balcony path (there are signs indicating that access to private property is prohibited) and further on, join a track in the forest.
Descend on the left to an intersection with a path coming from the right, where you will find a PR®.
(6) Go straight down this rough and steep track. Once at the bottom, when you reach a meadow, turn left onto a concrete path, then quickly right onto a trail, following the yellowPR® markings.
Go to the Ravin de l'Enfer marker at the next intersection, then turn left to the Aiguebrun marker.
(7) Turn right towards Buoux. Cross the valley via a bridge, then turn left. At the Chemin de Frau signpost a few metres further on, follow the GR® and GRP® markings, climbing up to the right via a winding paved slanting street that leads to the top of the cliffs.
Once at the top, follow the path that runs along the cliffs, offering some breathtaking views of the valley as well as a rocky outcrop called l'Aiguille and the Fort de Buoux on the opposite slope.
(8) At an open space, the GR® trail branches off to the right. Ignore it and continue along the cliffs until you reach a wide path further on, where you will find the GR® trail again. Follow this path to the left, which will quickly take you back towards the village. When you reach a few isolated houses, continue along the road to reach the RD 113, which you descended at the start of the hike.
(1) Climb back up to the village and return to the visitor car park via the same route as at the start of the walk (S/E).
