Tour of Ågvatnet from Å i Lofoten

Ågvatnet is a pretty lake surrounded by mountains just above Å, a small fishing village at the end of the Lofoten archipelago. This hike goes around it on a tricky trail with mud, rocks, dense forest and a few handrails. You will finish this challenging hike by crossing the charming village of Å with its red wooden houses on stilts, a picture-postcard image of the Lofoten Islands!

Description of the walk

Park in the Å car park, just after the tunnel, at the very end of the road that crosses the entire Lofoten archipelago.

(S/E) From the car park, about halfway up, take the wooden walkway that climbs to the right at a small wooden sign indicating Ågdalen. The path then descends towards the lake with several possible passages in fairly muddy and wet areas.

The path then becomes a little more complicated with some technical sections and a few handrails that require some easy climbing. Continue along the lake until you reach a footbridge at a small peninsula jutting out into the lake.

(1) Continue to the right after the footbridge to bypass a marshy area. Then return to the lake and follow it very closely on rocks where the trail is difficult to find. Continue in the same direction through the woods. A short climb up a peninsula follows. Be careful on the descent that follows, as it can be very muddy and slippery. After that, the path is less complicated and quickly rejoins the road after a short climb.

(2) Turn right and then immediately left towards the Torrfisk museum. In the car park, turn right between the rorbuer (fishermen's huts) to cross the stream from the lake via a small walkway on stilts. Pass the Norsk Fiskevaersmuseum on the main street, then turn right once and then again onto a small footpath that will take you to the car park where you started. (S/E)

Practical information

Free parking (rare in Lofoten).

This hike requires good footwear (high-top, waterproof boots) or even walking sticks, which will need to be stowed away for sections with handrails.

In the nearby area

The Torrfisk museum (100 NOK) is interesting with a multilingual host (a former fisherman).

At the end of the lake, you can continue towards the pass, Ågskaret (an additional 400 m elevation gain), then towards Brekka beach... but I didn't do it.

We did this hike following 95% of the route. It's not difficult, even for people who suffer from vertigo like us. There's just one climb (at (1) on this trail), where you have to climb about 4 metres, putting your feet in carved steps and holding on to a chain, all at the water's edge. Otherwise, it's an easy hike, not too long, with superb scenery (without having to climb the high peaks around it). We were overtaken by some athletes who were following the same trail to the bottom of the lake to climb to the top...
Parking was free and, as a result, completely full.
The end of the tour through the village of Å is indeed nicer than returning via the E10.

A beautiful hike with no elevation gain (which is rare in Lofoten)
