Reinebringen

An iconic hike in the Lofoten Islands, Reinebringen is very popular, but the view from the top of Reinefjorden and its fishing villages connected by bridges is well worth the effort.

The ascent is via a staircase with 1978 steps built by Nepalese sherpas.

Description of the walk

This hike starts from the car park (paid) at the cultural centre (kultursenter) in Reine (Eva Harr gallery).

(S/E) Go up Reineveien, the main street that runs through the village, towards the E10 road.

(1) Cross the road and follow the E10 on the left on the footpath. The road goes through a tunnel, which you must not take. Follow the footpath along the coast until you reach a staircase.

(2) This is where the climb up 1,978 steps begins (approximately 450 m elevation gain over a little more than 1 km)! Take your time, it's exhausting...

(3) At the top of the stairs, you will reach a pass with a bird's eye view of Reinefjorden, Reine and the other fishing villages connected by bridges. Do not go near the edge, as it is a bit slippery and steep. A gust of wind can quickly come up. To reach the summit of Reingbringen, continue along the ridge on the left via a few steps and a rugged path.

(4) Breathtaking view of the lake below, Reinevatnet and the fjord... Be careful, the summit is very busy and the surroundings are vertiginous. Return to the starting point by following the same route (S/E).

Practical information

The hike is not difficult, except for muscle and joint fatigue from the climb and especially the descent down the stairs. Walking sticks (preferably without metal tips) may be helpful for the descent.

Paid parking (1, 3 or 5-hour passes) to be paid at the cultural centre counter. In July 2025, the 5-hour pass costs NOK 250.

Other parking is available at Reine harbour (a little further away and payment via the Easy Park app).

Alternatively, free parking is available along the E10 (but arrive early or very late):
- just before the Djupfjord Bridge between Moskenes and Reine on the right,
- or in a small bend on the right just after the Reine intersection (heading towards Hamnøy).

Drones are prohibited (we saw someone being reprimanded by a guard).

The walk from the car park is a good way to warm up your muscles. After that, climbing the 2,000 or so steps isn't particularly interesting from a hiking perspective. In fact, you have to persevere to the top to receive the reward that awaits you there: a magnificent 360° view
