Tencreek to Talland Bay

With Looe and Polperro close by, Tencreek is a popular campsite for holiday-makers, and also access to many walks in the area. This is a short, there-and-back walk, but a walk that, after completing it, you will know it has been completed.

Description of the walk

(S/E) The route follows the lane to the edge of the campsite field, to a gate which enters the campsite, go through a gate (this is to show non-residents' access point). Follow the edge of the field on the right, giving respect for resident campers' privacy. On the right, there is a gate leading into a walkway around the edge of farm fields. This first section is fenced; follow the fence line to the gateway.

(1) At the gateway, there is a weather gauge, the Tencreek Cornish Weather Rope, and a pole with a white ball on the top. At this point, provided there is reasonable visibility, the route ahead should become apparent. From this point, the hill rapidly descends. Proceeding down the hill, holiday lodges, the church, and 'a Landmark' (E) (as marked on the Ordnance Survey map) will come into view. The next section may not be clearly defined; follow the GPX in the Visorando app, and/or follow the hedge on the right.

(2) At this point, a second 'Landmark' will come into view. Continue down, be careful with the last section before the road, it's a wooded section with steps, and could become slippery. At the road, turn right passing the church.

(3) At the church (B) there is an option to walk through the graveyard to a high point where the graveyard overlooks Talland Bay, a Pew with a View. Continue down the hill to the bay and the odd seasonal shop/cafe.

(4) After exploring the area (It has been claimed to have been a favorite cove for smugglers), the route back follows the same path in reverse (3) to (S/E). The height gain for the first 500m is some 100m in height, which will be 'taxing'; consider your pace, and keep hydrated. At (2) look up and out for the pole with the white ball on top (1) is the direction to take. As the hill levels off, take stock of what has been achieved (have a rest, turn around and enjoy the view, it's a way of getting your breath back without telling others how whacked you may be). Complete the route back to (S/E).

Notes

  • Start: For the purpose of this walk, the start point is at Tencreek Campsite (W3W- sculpting.prompt.silks) There is a bus route a short distance from the campsite entrance, on the A387. The Bus route between Looe and Polperro Bus Timetable>>
  • Transport : Timings of the buses should be confirmed, allowing for the return trip. The timing of this route is dependant on personal/group pace and t time for exploring.
  • Parking: At the Campsite, confirm permission if not a resident. The Cornish country lanes can be narrow, with only passing places, do not consider them as suitable parting laybys.
  • Mobile Phone: There will be little or no mobile signal in the area. Do not rely a mobile signal, it is best to download the route, following the route using the GPX on the Visorando app. It is advisable to have a backup plan, a battery bank for the mobile phone.
  • Note: Ensure that the country code is followed and that dogs are kept under control.
  • Advice: As you start the walk, it is a gentle slope, around farm fields, but then it gets progressively steeper. This is a There-and-back walk, without any options of an alternative route back. What goes down, must come up. The hill is a slog; however, the rewards are great.
  • Refreshments: There is a seasonal cafe by the beach

Worth a visit

(E) The 'Landmark'. The large structures there are a total of four, two at this location and two a Nautical mile further East. The principle is ships on sea trials sail up at a given speed, sighting the two, when one covers the other, start timing until passing the other set, giving a sea trial speed for a nautical mile. This would be done numerous times and under different conditions, testing both the crew and the seaworthiness of the ship.

(B) Talland Church and churchyard, Grade 1 listed building.
