On the heights of Tilff

Entirely on the right bank of the Ourthe, this hike will take you to the hamlets of Méry, Hautgné, Hayen and Cortil on the heights of Tilff, as well as the vast Bois des Manants forest, both on the way there and on the way back.

Description of the walk

Starting point: the "La Bulle" carpool car park, which can be accessed via the B602 motorway slip road.

[TEC] Lines 28 and 63: Place des Porais stop
[SNCB] Line 43 Liège - Marloie: Tilff station

(S/E) Leave the car park and head towards Brunsode Castle. Follow the paved and then concrete path that passes to the left of the castle. Just after the castle, at the crossroads, turn left, pass in front of the Bee Museum and you will arrive at the monument in memory of the resistance fighters who died in 1940-1945.

(1) Walk across the lawn to the left of the monument, then walk alongside the school until you reach a Y-shaped intersection. Turn right onto Rue Cortinel. Cross Rue des Hêtres and continue straight ahead, first alongside a car park, then along the paved path, still on Rue Cortinel. At the next intersection, continue straight ahead, first on asphalt, then on a wide gravel path, and finally on asphalt again. You will come to the N689 at a place called Place des Djâles (alt. 170).

(2) Cross the main road at a slight angle to the right to enter Rue de Grady, following the green diamond road sign. Pass by the Bihet spring fountain. Arrive at the junction with Rue du Meny.

(3) Continue to the right on a gravel path. In the bend that follows, ignore two grassy paths that lead off to the right, then go through a metal gate. Pass a path on the right, then another that leads off to the left. Shortly afterwards, atthe Y-junction, take the gravel path on the left, leaving the PL Losange Vert.

(4) But after a few metres, leave the gravel path and turn left onto a narrow dirt track. Pass a wide path that climbs to the right. After a short descent on the path, which becomes very rocky and steep, just before a stream, climb to the right onto a barely visible path that quickly widens and becomes a dirt track. This leads to a wide gravel path.

(5) Follow it to the right. Ignore the side paths to reach, along with the Green Diamond PL and a Red mountain bike route, the place known as Monument Donnay (alt. 210).

(6) Leave the wide stone path and climb to the left, following the path, which is very rocky in its first half, winding through the woods. At the junction with a wide stone path, continue straight ahead. At the crossroads (blue mountain bike route), continue straight ahead on a narrower dirt track to reach a Y-junction.

(7) Go up the narrow path on the right. Continue along this path, which in the right season is heavily overgrown with vegetation, mainly ferns. After a short descent, you will come to a wide stony path.

(8) Follow it to the right. At the two crossroads you come to, continue straight ahead. At the T-junction, descend to the left to reach a crossroads.

(9) Cross it and continue straight downhill, following the green diamond sign, passing to the right of a water catchment. After a few dozen metres, you will reach a wide path. Continue straight downhill. When you reach the fence of a private property, turn left. Walk along this property and you will come to an asphalt road.

(10) Continue in the same direction, take the very rocky path between hedges and you will come to a small road at the entrance to Méry. Go down to the right. But after a few dozen metres, atthe Y-junction, continue left on the asphalt road, which is quickly replaced by a grassy path. In front of a meadow, you will come to a cross path.

(11) Following the yellow and red GRP® markings, turn right and descend this path to the first street, Rue de Méry. When you reach the church, descend to the left. Opposite house no. 83, turn left again, following the red mountain bike route but leaving the yellow and red markings, which go to the right. After about 100 metres, turn right onto the red mountain bike route and leave it again very quickly as it veers to the right. Cross Rue du Gobry (N674). Head right towards the Ourthe.

(12) Without reaching the main road (N633), just behind the directional signs, climb left onto the discreet path, following the Chemin de Saint-Jacques. This is a long climb between the edge of the forest and the fences of the various properties bordering the N633. After passing between meadows and to the right of a large shed, you will come out onto a small road.

(13) Continue straight ahead on the asphalt road. However, when you reach house no. 17, leave the asphalt road and turn left onto a gravel path, which leads to a road in the village of Hautgné. Make a brief first turn left then right to climb the wide path, alongside the Chemin de Saint-Jacques and two mountain bike routes. Shortly before an old chapel converted into a house, make a very brief first turn left then right towards the asphalt and continue straight ahead, climbing up to a nearby Y-junction.

(14) Continue along the dead-end road on the left. Just after the Hautgné exit sign, leave the asphalt and descend to the left, following the single yellow mountain bike trail and the yellow and red GRP® markings . After the descent, just after a stone wall in the meadow on the left, at the Y-junction, climb to the left with the single GRP® and come out onto a road.

(15) Cross it carefully to climb up the stony then grassy path opposite, between the meadows. At the Y-junction, continue on the path on the right, which is very rocky and still between the meadows. Join a wide path. Follow it to the left towards the hamlet of Hayen. You will come out onto the main street.

(16) Cross it and continue straight ahead, leaving the GRP® which branches off to the right. Turn right, then left. When the asphalt turns a quarter turn to the left, go straight ahead on a grassy path which quickly narrows and begins to descend under the canopy and becomes stony. On the descent, turn right to go down an old, rutted stony path, pass over the Gobry stream and then to the right of an isolated house before climbing back up to a small road.

(17) Climb it to the right for a few dozen metres, then leave it and climb to the left, taking a dirt track under the canopy (which allows you to avoid a bend in the road), following the yellow mountain bike markings. After a short but steep climb, you will return to the asphalt. Climb it to the left until you reach the fork.

(18) Leave the asphalt road by turning sharply to the right and climb the stony path, following the green diamond sign and the yellow and red GRP® markings again. At the top, turn right onto a wide stony path and follow it, quickly leaving the yellow and red GRP® markings on the left and ignoring several side paths. After a short climb, cross a forest path junction.

(19) Continue straight ahead. The path narrows and becomes a trail that begins to descend. Make a very short first turn left then right. The trail becomes a path again and continues downhill, becoming steeper towards the end and reaching a wide stone path opposite a stream.

(20) Continue to the right and go through a metal gate to reach a crossroads at a place called Chapelle de la Chawresse (altitude 200). Pass to the right of this chapel and follow the small road. At the crossroads at the entrance to Cortil, continue straight ahead to the Y-junction that follows.

(21) Stay on the asphalt path on the left, which becomes a grassy path, Sentier de Bièt'mé, at house number 8A. At the end of this path, continue on the asphalt road, passing Rue du Bailly. At the Y-junction, turn left into Rue de la Cabine. A few metres further on, at another Y-junction, turn right, still on Rue de la Cabine. At the end of this road, continue right onto Rue du Baty until you reach the main road.

(22) Cross it with extreme caution and descend the asphalt path opposite, at number 13, which leads to a street opposite number 35. Follow it to the right and then, at the Y-junction, take the street on the left, ignoring Rue Baoufontaine. At the next Y-junction, go down Rue du Ruisseau, which has a 20% gradient in its first section! Be careful! Then, when the slope has levelled out, leave the asphalt and turn left onto a path that goes under the canopy and runs along the hillside to join a wider path.

(23) Follow it to the right, continuing downhill until you reach the metal chicane at the crossroads. Turn right onto Rue du Chera and, further on, just before the sports hall, turn left downhill. Pass between the hall and the scout premises, then go down a wide gravel path that leads back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Throughout the description, you will see "PL" followed by a geometric shape and a colour, for example " PL Blue Rectangle ". This is the marking for the Blue Rectangle Local Walk.
You may also see "SGR" or " GR®" or "GRP®" followed by the colours white/red or yellow/red. These are the markings for the Sentiers de Grande Randonnée (long-distance hiking trails) network.

For those travelling by train, leave the station, cross the Ourthe river on the cycle/pedestrian bridge, then cross the square on the right, cross the roundabout and take the concrete path that runs to the left of the pond (formed by what remains of the old moat) and Brunsode Castle to reach the car park where the walk starts.

To return, follow the same route in reverse.

Worth a visit
