Stoumont - Trois-Ponts

Amblève Valley

This stage ofthe GRP® 571 starts in Stoumont, passes in front of Froidcourt Castle and crosses the Amblève in Cheneux. The route then descends towards the Coo waterfall, crosses the river again and reaches Trois-Ponts via the Belvédère de Ster.

Description of the walk

GRP® 571 Yellow and Red Trail Markers

(S) Opposite the entrance to Stoumont church, go down the street on the right. At the bottom, continue to the right. Turn left at thefirst intersection and turn right before the cemetery. At the T-junction, turn left into the dead-end road until you reach the dirt track.

(1) Turn right. Go through the turnstile in the meadow but ignore the path on the right. Head towards the stake on the left in the middle of the meadow and, at the large oak tree, go down the slope to the fence.

(2) Take the passage through the fence closed by a chain. Follow the fence and turn left at the fork. Cross the stream. At the next fork, keep left and go up. Follow the balcony path.

(3) Pass the place called Le Congo. Following the foliage, you will see the Amblève below and, around a bend, the Château de Froidcourt. Continue along the path until you reach a chicane.

(4) Go through the chicane and at the crossroads, turn right onto the descending path. At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead, leave the woods and discover a superb view of the rear of Froidcourt Castle. Cross the meadows and enter the trees. Leave the path on your right and continue along the meadow, descending to the road.

(5) Turn right. Further down, a road will come back up on your left; continue downhill. Cross over the railway line and continue along the road. Pass the place called La Vaulx Renard and leave the road that branches off to the left to continue straight ahead. Cross the Amblève via the Cheneux bridge and climb up to the intersection.

(6) Turn left towards Monceau. After the farm, in the bend, take the path on the left going up into the woods. Keep to the left and go up. At the crossroads, keep left and continue uphill. Pass the house and turn left at the road.

(7) Cross the hamlet of Monceau. At the fork, continue left. Further on, ignore the path on the left and continue on the road to leave the built-up area. Go uphill and continue on the road, ignoring the two paths on your right. Pass the hamlet of Beauloup with a superb view of the Château de Froidcourt. Continue along the road until you reach the dirt track on your right.

(8) Go up to the right. The path turns right and climbs up a wide forest track. Keep left until you reach a fork.

(9) Go straight ahead and climb, ignoring all the paths on either side. Follow the fence and turn right onto the next path. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead and then turn left about 300 m further on. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead until you reach the road.

(10) Turn left. Pass the place called Fontaine Saint-Remacle. Walk along the road and pass the large pylon and the power station. Turn right immediately and follow the road downhill with a view of the valley until you reach the crossroads with the cross between two oak trees on your left. Continue straight ahead until you reach the path on the left.

(11) Turn left towards the power station. Stay on the path between the meadow and the woods. Further on, the path turns right and enters the forest. Ignore the path on the right and continue downhill. The path turns right and at the fork, take the left to reach a wide path. Continue left, ignore the hairpin path on your right and continue on the wide path.

(12) Ignore the grassy path on the right. Continue down the forest path until you reach the road. On your left, you will see the lower horseshoe-shaped basin of the Coo dam. At the crossroads, continue along the road opposite and then keep right at the fork. At the T-junction, turn right onto the road that turns left and runs alongside a car park.

(13) At the bridge, turn left to see the waterfall below. Take the small path on your right and pass the brewery. At the church, turn right and go down the stairs. At the entrance to the amusement park, you will see the Coo Waterfall. Retrace your steps back to the bridge.

(13) Cross the bridge. Take the stairs near the turret if you want to be between the two waterfalls. Walk to the N633 and turn left towards Remouchamps. At the chairlift and car park payment point, cross the road carefully and take the stairs opposite. Climb the winding steps to a crossroads with a wide forest path.

(14) Continue straight ahead on the path. Climb the winding path and take the path opposite at the next crossroads. Climb further and, at the top, turn right. Ignore the hairpin path on the left and walk along the wide forest path until you reach a crossroads.

(15) Leave the path descending to the right and continue on the forest road for a short while. Look for the path in the embankment on your left.

(16) Turn left immediately and climb uphill. Follow the path as it winds its way up. Return to the top of a wide path and turn right until you reach the Belvédère de Ster.

(17) Continue along the path, ignoring the one on the left. At the fork (not shown on the maps), go left until you reach the wide path. Continue left and walk along the meadows. Turn right onto the road, ignore the path and trail on your right and continue until you reach a path on your left.

(18) Turn left onto the dirt track. When you return to the road, continue left. At the T-junction, with a picnic table on the left and the Croix du Démineur, go straight ahead onto the wide forest track opposite. Stay on the main track until you reach the multiple junction.

(19) Take thesecond path on the right. At the fork (not shown on the maps), turn left. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead. A forest path will appear on your left; continue downhill. Ignore the path on your right further on and continue. At the house, turn right onto the road and come out between two tunnels.

(20) Turn right. Go under the railway line and at the intersection, continue left. Go over the Amblève river and go up the street to the intersection in the bend. Cross carefully and head towards Wanne. Go up to the Trois-Ponts station (E).
