_Start:_ Car park at the bottom of Mont Hacha Grande
Park your vehicle at the 1st intersection on the road leading to Papagayo beach. Notice a stony road that climbs up to a farmhouse on the mountainside.
_Waymarkers:The path up to Hacha Grande is not always easy to follow from start to finish, as it is not clearly visible or signposted.
(S/E) Follow the gravel road North-East up the mountain, towards a farm. Go past it and follow the path up to the fork in the road to Mount Ajache Chico.
(1) Go right, due South, to the summit of Mount Ajache Chico (panorama).
(2) Return to the previous junction. On the descent, visualize the path you'll take to climb Hacha Grande to the North.
(1) Follow the Hacha Grande trail as far as possible, sometimes the trail will be hard to see, so take your time. A few cairns have been erected to help you find your way.
(3) Descend in a North-North-Westerly direction (easy descent). The path is visible until you reach a stony road that you can see in the distance.
(4) Follow the gravel road to the right. Further on, a road on your right joins the one you're on: this is the road leading to the sheepfold, which you may be able to see at your back later on.
(5) Follow it to the right, heading South-East.
(6) Now stop following the road but follow the canyon to the left, towards the nearest beach.
Halfway along, you'll come across a wooden waypost lying half on the ground. Reach Playa Parrado.
(7) To the North, at the edge of the beach, you'll see a small blockhouse. To the South, you'll see a concrete block at the top of the hill, which is where you need to go. Go up the hill to the South of the beach. At the top of this small hill, head West and you'll find a clearly visible path. Keep going until you reach a fork in the road.
(8) Continue straight ahead along the gravel road to Punta Garajao (viewpoint).
(9) Return to the previous junction.
(8) Continue along the gravel road to the left (West) until you reach another fork.
(10) Turn left, direction South - South-East, follow the main road for at least 1 h, leaving the adjacent paths.
(11) Continue straight ahead. Stay on the road for a long time, as it curves round several times. Arrive at a crossroads with several stony roads.
(12) On your left, you'll see traces of cars passing through the canyon. Follow this canyon as it descends towards the ocean (East then South-East). Reach a "secret" beach, which requires a short climb.
(13) Turn around and return to the previous junction.
(12) Turn left three times onto the gravel road. Stay on the main gravel road and come to a small crossroads with a sign.
(14) Continue straight ahead. Further on, you'll come to a fork in the road. Keep heading West, leaving the gravel road on your left.
(15) At a fork in the road, leave the "main" gravel road and bear left, towards Playa Mujeres.
(16) Continue on the right-hand road, heading South-West. You'll pass a stop sign, and come to a gravel road leading to Playa Papagayo.
(17) Cross this road by cutting across a field, off-road, heading South-West, and join the small canyons.
(18) Cross a 1st well (echo) and continue along the canyon to the ocean.
(19) Pass a 2nd well. Turn right towards Playa de las Mujeres, heading North-West. Reach the beach, relatively large and sparsely populated; the town is hidden by a pretty little cliff.
(20) Head towards the car park, by either :
- following the main road.
- as shown on the map, follow the small paths to the North-North-East and cut across the fields to catch up with the main gravel road used by tourists to leave the beaches.
(21) Catch up with the main road and follow it to the left. Follow the road along the parallel path to the North.
(22) Turn right, North-North-West on the gravel road to reach the car park (S/E).
Obviously, we won't know if we were wrong...
