Summit of Arama from the Col d'Arama

A magnificent ridge path, very steep at the start, offering sublime 360° panoramic views of the Ninndo Mountains and the Coral Sea, which surrounds this strip of land, just ten kilometres wide to the east and west. One of the most beautiful views in all of New Caledonia.

Description of the walk

Park at the Col d’Arama picnic area. The view from there is already magnificent.

(S/E) Opposite, you’ll find a small copse and an unmarked path; in fact, it’s a narrow gully carved out by water. Follow it north-west, walking for about fifty metres before reaching the harder rock. Then tackle afirst very steep climb. You’ll then reach a commemorative plaque.

(1) Take in the view here, then continue along the path. Start with a short descent, then tackle another very steep slope. You’ll reach another 360° panoramic viewpoint.

(2) Descend again, then start climbing once more to reach the Arama Summit and its sublime views.

(3) From this summit, the ridge path is very narrow. Take care here: avoid continuing along this Monts Ninndo traverse in wet weather or on slippery ground. In any case, stay alert and follow the path carefully.
Take it to reach the final viewpoint.

(4) Retrace your steps along the outward route to return to the Col d’Arama car park (S/E).

On the return journey, take great care on the descent sections, which are very steep.

Notes

Warning: very steep ascents (and therefore steep descents), technical trail. Sturdy footwear essential, walking poles recommended.
No shade along the route; make sure you bring plenty of water and sun protection.
Note regarding (4): in theory, it is possible to continue following the ridges for several more kilometres; a full traverse of the route covers approximately 13 km. However, as the highest points of the massif are at (3) and (4), this shorter version of the route offers the most beautiful views.

Worth a visit

There are numerous spectacular panoramic views across the entire Ninndo mountain range and the sea that surrounds it.
