The Thiuvado Trail

A well-maintained trail, opened in 2025 by youth organisations in Koumac and easily accessible from the road. The route offers stunning panoramic views of the lagoon and the surrounding valleys, without presenting any significant difficulty. A magnificent spot for sunrises and sunsets, depending on the season.

Description of the walk

From Koumac, head towards Kaala-Gomen; the car park at the start is on the left-hand side of the RPN1 road, which leads to the Karem Bay Hotel, signposted by a lovely wooden sign reading ‘Sentier du Thiuvado’.

(S/E) Take the path that heads away from the RPN1 and joins a fairly wide track.

(1) Continue straight ahead onto the small path, the entrance to which is marked by a wooden post with its tip painted pink. From there, there is only one possible route. Climb steadily until you are directly below the Thiuvado, taking in the succession of panoramic views. Take a moment to rest on the bench provided. An anchor has been drawn with pebbles at this spot.

(2) Then head back down, following the same route you took on the way up, to the car park (S/E).

Notes

(S/E) At the car park, there is a small, shaded picnic area and an information board detailing the trail’s features.
The trail is very well signposted throughout (green markings on the ground), so finding your way is straightforward.

There is no water on the trail and little shade, so be sure to bring sun protection and a water bottle.

There aretwo or three slightly technical sections, so make sure you wear good footwear; this walk is best done in dry weather.
