This delightful walk is good when the ground is waterlogged as it is on minor roads starting in Shutford and passing through Balscote. It provides a good view point of ponds with a range of birds just before crossing A422 Stratford Road and returning to Shutford via Five Ways.

Description of the walk

Start: Park in High Street, Shutford. The bus stop is located here too.

(S) Walk down hill (east) to the crossroads with George and Dragon on your right turn, left into Ivy Lane for about 500 m. At the T-junction turn left onto The Plain Road and continue for 300 m to the fork in road.

(1) Take the right fork in road signposted to Balscote. Continue through Balscote and after 1.2 km the junction of Shutford Road and Chapel Lane.

(2) Bear left, leaving Balscote carry straight on for about 1 km and look out for bird viewing place on your left. Take time out to have a good look for birdlife. It is then a short distance to the main Banbury to Statford road, cross carefully over and continue about 400 m to T-junction.

(3) At the T-junction turn right carry on passing a road on your left to reach the junction of Ironstone Lane on your right, about 400 m.

(4) Take a right turn onto Ironstone Lane look out for building on right which posh cars are looked after. After about 900 m reach the main Banbury to Stratford road, cross over slight right then left into minor road. Continue down this road about 1.5 km to the crossroads.

(5) Bear right at Five Ways along Banbury Road, this it is basically straight on to Shutford. It is 500 m to the crossroads in Shutford with the George and Dragon on your left.

(E) Continue along High Street where you parked in Shutford.

Leaving the village of Whichford, footpaths climb over the hill and descend to the house at Gottenham, climb again and eventually reach the road near Great Rollright. A short section of road before footpaths and tracks with views over rolling cotswolds take you to the village of Long Compton. Returning with a climb and fantastic woodland with bluebells before reaching the road back to Whichford central green and your parked car.
