Path of the Gods (alternative route from Praiano)

A legendary trail along the Amalfi Coast, stretching for just under ten kilometres, offering breathtaking views of the magnificent coastline plunging sheer into the vast Tyrrhenian Sea.
This alternative route starts from Praiano rather than Bomerano, which involves a steep climb at the start to reach the trail but allows you to begin from the coast and avoid having to take the bus to Bomerano.

Description of the walk

The route starts from Piazza San Luca by the Duomo in Praiano, which can also be reached from the village’s main bus stop, located next to the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Gennaro, via Via Guglielmo Marconi (15 mins).

(S) Take the stairs leading straight up the slope to Via Constantinopoli, where the path leading up to the Path of the Gods begins.

(1) Access the path via the steps that pass through a building (signposted), and begin the fairly steep climb for about 1.5 km.

(2) Join the Sentier des Dieux at the first small hamlet you come to, near a fountain offering a lovely view. Once on the Sentier des Dieux, the route is straightforward and follows a single path for about 3 km until you reach the village of Nocelle.

(3) Once you’ve entered the village, turn right to follow the path out of the village, which joins the road just under a kilometre further on.

(4) Follow the road to Montepertuso (the footpath is closed).

(5) Once you have passed through the centre of Montepertuso, leave the road by turning left onto the path leading down to Positano. Please note: 20 metres further on, at the Y-junction, follow the main path to the right.
After a lovely descent (-360 m over 1.3 km) and passing through the centre of Positano, you’ll reach Positano’s public beach (E).

Notes

The path faces due south: make sure you bring adequate sun protection. There are a few fountains and refreshment stands in the hamlets where you can top up your supplies, particularly with water.

The alternative route from Praiano allows you to hike from coast to coast but involves steeper gradients than the usual route starting from Bomerano.

There are plenty of buses in Positano serving all the towns along the Amalfi Coast, from Sorrento to Salerno.

Worth a visit

The trail certainly lives up to its reputation, offering spectacular views of the coastline plunging sheer down to the sea, but it may also cause vertigo in those prone to it.

Don’t hesitate to continue on foot from Nocelle to Positano – it’s a pleasant stretch.

A lovely walk, with stunning scenery.
The only downsides:
(1) it was very crowded on the upper part of the walk, from the first hamlet to Nocelle (where the little restaurant Santa Croce offers a magnificent view of Positano, and the pasta was very good).
(2) The section along the road just past Nocelle isn’t particularly pleasant, but it’s the only way back to Positano. Fortunately, there isn’t much traffic.
