Description of the walk

Park in the pay-and-display car park in Massa Lubrense on the village square of Termini, opposite the Hotel Caruso.
Note: this car park is accessible by public transport from the province of Naples, via Sorrento, and from Salerno, via Positano.

(S/E) Follow the large yellow markings to reach the Y-junction on Via Campanella.

(1) Turn right onto it; this road forms part of the Alta Via dei Monti Lattari route. You will soon come to another junction.

(2) Stay on the left-hand branch. Continue along this road, which is sometimes paved, passing through the hamlets of Cancello and Namonte in turn. You will then reach the junction of the two Alta Via trails.

(3) Keep right on Alta Via No. 11 to reach Punta Campanella and Torre Minerva; you can walk around them if you wish.

(4) Retrace your steps to the junction with the GR®. Turn right to reach the junction of Alta Via No. 10 and the Vecchio sentiero franato.

(5) Take this more difficult, rocky path on the right and climb up to the ridge to enjoy a superb view of the bay.
Return to the previous junction, then turn right and continue along the Alta Via No. 10. Pass beneath the summit of Monte Santa Croce and its military antennas. Descend slightly towards a pine forest. Find the junction with the Way of the Cross.

(6) Head towards the white building at the summit of Monte San Costanzo to reach the Chapel of San Costanzo

(7) You can walk around it before heading back down via the Way of the Cross.

(6) Then turn right towards the north, crossing the road several times to return to the initial junction passed on the way up.

(1) Turn right and follow the route back in the opposite direction to return to the car park in Massa Lubrense (S/E).

A lovely hike in mid-April. There were several guided groups, though mainly on the first section, up to the headland. Few people tackled the climb up the ridge, which is quite challenging (steep slopes, rocky paths and dense vegetation). Trekking poles are highly recommended! The views of the Amalfi Coast and Capri are stunning. Please note: the GR markings are not always clearly visible, and there are red markings that should not be confused with them; make sure you follow the GPS carefully.

We did this route in early May in fairly overcast weather. On the first section, heading down towards the headland, there were a few walkers. However, on the way back up through the rocky terrain, there was absolutely no one. The view of the island of Capri is magnificent for three-quarters of the route. The descent along the paved Roman road is very beautiful and very easy. However, the return climb through the rocks and vegetation on the GR is long and tiring and not always easy to follow, but you get there in the end. Towards the end, there is a fairly difficult section and my wife, who suffers from vertigo, had a few scares… but the view is magnificent. A very lovely hike overall.

A magnificent hike not to be missed, because there aren’t actually that many on the Amalfi Coast. This one is definitely worth the detour. We did it in the opposite direction, which means you start with an uphill climb; the view from the chapel is 360°, then the ascent in thesecond section is gradual and almost entirely on a paved path, like a Roman road. Everything is well signposted and it’s beautiful all along the way, with a superb view of Capri. In the end, in December, there were very few of us on this route.

Video of the hike taken at the end of December on a beautiful sunny day. Stunning views of Capri to the north and the Amalfi Coast to the south: https://youtu.be/qeVwY41flXA
The ascent takes place through the forest.
