Park in the square in front of Saint-Martin Church in Mavilly.
(S/E) Take Rue Pagand and follow it to the end.
Note for the entire walk: small signs with a picture of a tree mark the route throughout the walk.
(1) Turn left onto Route de Nantoux until you reach the junction with a wide path.
(2) Turn left onto a dirt track called the Chemin du Tacot and continue along this track, which follows the Combe de Mandelot.
(3) Several dozen metres after a left-hand bend, a sign has been erected (in April 2026). It explains how to see the largest service tree in France (14.8m tall, 4.5m in circumference, and over 400 years old!) which is hidden below a pasture. You can view the service tree and then turn back to the sign. Continue along the path until you reach a tarmac road and follow it to the right to the junction at the Ruisseau de la Combe.
(4) Take the tarmac road (D23D) almost opposite, leading to Mandelot. In the centre of the hamlet, turn left, pass by the castle and go under the bridge of the old railway line.
(5) Continue straight on until you reach the junction with the D23.
You have two options:
- either follow point 6 below.
- or cut across the forest and fields: take the road downhill, and 80m after the junction, follow a path that climbs to the right into the forest. Some lovely steps have been laid out. After a hairpin bend leading onto a pasture, veer right as you climb, and follow the path. You will come across the wayside shrine from point 7 and will have enjoyed the countryside!
(6) Take a hairpin bend to the right, then do the same to the left about 300 m further on.
(7) Take the path on the left. At the wayside shrine, keep to the left and begin the descent towards Mavilly. This descent is quite steep and stony, and can be muddy depending on the weather, so good footwear is essential. Turn right at the town hall to reach the church square (S/E).
