Rough Tor, Brown Willy, and King Arthur's Hall

Myth or legend, King Arthur, has many deep-seated roots here in Cornwall, from nearby Tintagel Castle, Excalibur's Sword in Dozmary Pool. King Arthur's Hall, high up on Bodmin Moor, adds more to the legend of the King.

The route pays homage to the Wessex memorial, climbs the highest point in Cornwall, and then onto King Arthur's Hall, a neolithic enclosure; however, recent research has suggested that the whole area could be hundreds of years earlier.

Description of the walk

Start at >>>

(S/E) Heading south and over the bridge, veering left, southeast up to a linear feature, follow up to the end.

(1) At the end, continue up toward the saddle of the two Tors. At the top, turn right, and southwest. A route up to the top of the tor and the memorial.

(2) Return back, northwest to the saddle. Turn right and down, southeast to (3), cross the 'young' river, to (4) over the stile and up to the top of the tor.

(5) Note: To reach the next waypoint, choose the most suitable route; this may mean going off the app to get the best. Be mindful that vegetation can hide potholes, and boulders can be slippery.

(6) Head south and west down to the track, towards (7). To contour around Butter's Tor, check the river for a suitable crossing point. There is a bridge and a gate that may be locked. Crossing the river further down, the stream may be easier than climbing over the gate. Contour around Butter's Tor, northwesterly.

(8) Crossing the Del Lank River, a clapper bridge, then head southwest through the hamlet of Garrow towards the trees.

(9) Go through the trees over the hedge and handrail, to the wall to the east. At the edge of the wall, continue west across the open moorland to King Arthur's Hall.

(10) Continue west, handrail the wall on the left to the hamlet of Candra.

Escape Route: Nearest point for vehicular access, between (11) and (12)

(11) Turn right and north, handrail the wall on the right. Where the wall kinks, turn left, north to Alex Tor. Turn right and northeast, down to the country road.

(12) Turn right, and northeast, the road will turn to a track. Continue on the track to a point where it starts to drop down the hill.

(13) Turn left and north to northeast, to the Logan Rock. From this point to (14), the low ground will get wet; follow the app to contour around the wet area.

(14) Heading in a northerly direction, go through many Stone Age Settlements, including Hut Circles, and towards the bridge. Over the bridge on the left, see the memorial stone. Continue to (S/E).
