Rosans - Saint-Auban-sur-l'Ouvèze

Connecting these two beautiful little villages is a very varied stage, which takes the time to explore the Provençal countryside between meadows, orchards and hamlets. The summit of La Vanige, which is optional, is clearly worth the detour for its adventurous climb and aesthetic rocky ridge.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: The Tour of the Baronnies Provençales

Description of the walk

(S) From the centre of Rosans, head down towards the D994 road through the narrow streets of the old village. Opposite the municipal campsite, turn right along the D994 road for about 100 metres, following the GR®91. You will reach the crossroads of the path leading to La Gravière.

(1) Leave the road, keep left on the GR®, and descend towards the pastures. Cross the Ruisseau du Merdaric. In a bucolic setting, follow the GR®91 to reach the hamlet of Roman.

(2) Continue along a variety of paths, tracks and small roads until you reach the hamlet of L'Aubergerie.

(3) Continue left, still on the GR® and its red and white markings, pass the houses of Montferrand-la-Fare, and arrive at a crossroads near the hamlet's cemetery.

(4) Turn left here, heading south, and follow the right bank of the Ruisseau de la Marcijaye stream. Continue climbing until you reach the crossroads at a place called Ruisseau des Cabus.

(5) Continue left, crossing the hamlet of Les Viarrands. Then turn left 180° and shortly afterwards you will come to the crossroads with a PR®.

(6) Keep right on the GR®, continue, pass the Rocher de Corbière and then reach the Col de Corbières.

(7) Here you have two options:
- stay left on the GR® and follow a downhill path to the Gisfort crossroads,
- leave the GR® and turn right, heading north, which is the route shown on the map, towards the summit of Vanige. The short kilometre to the summit is splendid, but the path is steep and quite rugged in places. Alternatively, on the rocky ridge of Vanige, there are magnificent 360-degree views and the climb is easy with no technical difficulty.

(8) On the ridge, take the hairpin bend to the left to begin the steep descent to the Col du Rocher Percé.

(9) Then follow the signs to Saint-Auban-sur-l'Ouvèze on the left. Further on, leave the track and head for the Gisfort crossroads and the GR®91.

(10) Continue right on the GR® 91. Pass Serre de Chante-Duc, then the Caverne de l'Ours. You will then reach the hamlet of Le Pouzet.

(11) Continue right on the GR®91, enjoying a beautiful panoramic descent into the valley. Walk past the hamlets of Rochas and La Ciresse, then join the multi-directional road junction at Le Pont.

(12) Cross the bridge over the Ouvèze, turn right and continue to the centre of the pretty village of Saint-Auban-sur-l'Ouvèze, your destination for the day. (E)

Notes

Hiking in the Baronnies Provençales Regional Nature Park is best undertaken in April-May-June and September-October. In summer, it can be very hot in the Baronnies Provençales, and in winter, some paths may be impassable or snow-covered.

Set off each day with a good supply of water, as most fountains are not checked and some may have a very low flow rate in all seasons.

Important note at (7): the short kilometre to the summit of La Vanige is splendid, but the path is steep and quite rugged in places. For physical or weather reasons, it is possible to avoid going to the summit by following the GR® 91 towards Saint-Auban and joining the (10) directly.
(E) Saint-Auban-sur-l'Ouvèze: several accommodation options available.
Lodge de la Fontaine,
Chambres d'hôtes de la Galane
and, with a bit of luck, the Hôtel de la Clavelière)
