Ribeauvillé - Le Bonhomme

Stage thirteen, from Ribeauvillé to Le Bonhomme, is very long and involves a significant elevation gain. It marks the hiker’s entry into the Hautes-Vosges and its first major peaks: Hirzberg and Brézouard, via the Lapoutroie valley. With a mountain atmosphere and superb views in store.

Description of the walk

The route starts at Ribeauvillé Town Hall. You can reach it by walking up the Grand Rue from the Kaysersberg Valley Tourist Office in Ribeauvillé. The Tourist Office is right next to the square where the coach station is located.

The entire route follows the Red Rectangle, unless otherwise indicated.

(S) Opposite the town hall, head right up the Grand-Rue. At the end, by the fountain, continue right until you reach the roundabout at the edge of town.

(1) Turn left onto Rue du 3 Décembre (GR®5) and cross the Stengbach stream. Continue to Rue Saint-Morand.

(2) Turn right onto Rue Saint-Morand. Keep right around the bend and start the climb through the forest. Turn left then right and continue until you reach the Blue Cross signpost.

(3) Leave the GR®5 and turn left onto the Blue Cross path, which leads to Clausmatt. At a fork (elevation 522), keep left and follow the road to Clausmatt.

(4) Continue along the path that runs alongside the road. At a fork, keep right and head for the Sylo ruins (Blue Cross).

(5) From the beautiful Sylo ruins, which rise up from the ground, continue towards the Col du Seelacker. Carry on straight ahead. At the junction with the forest track, follow this to the right towards the pass.

(6) At the Col de Seelacker, continue along the path to a crossroads. Continue straight on to another crossroads.

(7) Then turn left twice to climb towards the Sapin des Français. Head straight on to reach the cross.

(8) Keep to the right, then the left. Then continue straight ahead until the hairpin bend. Take the bend to the right and continue the steady climb up to the Koenigsstuhl.

(9) Turn right, then straight on to cross a lovely plateau and reach the Roche du Tétras.

(10) Begin the descent towards Aubure on the right through a beautiful forest of majestic conifers. Stay on the path leading downwards opposite. You will reach a junction. Ignore the track leading off to the left and stay on the main track, which you should leave to the right after a bend in the path to follow a hillside track towards Aubure. Continuing straight on, you will reach Aubure via the Chemin du Kalblin.

(11) Follow it to the right and, at the end of the street, turn left and continue towards the town hall.

(12) Turn left (there’s a nice café next to the town hall), then right into Rue du Tétras. At the end of the street, follow the path that continues from it, keeping to the right then left to climb towards the Col de Fréland.

(13) Join a small road and follow it to the right (leaving the pass on your left).

(14) At a fork, follow the military track to the right leading to the Pierre des Trois Bans. Climb up and, at the next fork, keep to the right, still following the military track.

(15) At the junction, turn right towards the Pierre des Trois Bans. Head north and climb up to the Chalet de la Pierre des Trois Bans (a handy spot for a sheltered break).

(16) Continue left along the GR® to the Petit Brézouard. Pass the Steinkoepfel and then the Rehberg, keeping straight on at every junction until you reach the Yellow Ring marked trail.

(17) Keep heading towards the ridge. Shortly afterwards, keep to the right on the ridge and continue to the Petit Brézouard (stunning views).

(18) Head straight down to reach the refuge. Then turn right to avoid the quiet zone and immediately left. Go straight on until you reach a junction (marker).

(19) Continue straight ahead through the forest to reach the Chalet Fréchard.

(20) Continue along the path and go round the Haïcot on the left. You’ll come out onto a wide path; follow it to the right and you’ll soon reach a crossroads.

(21) Then turn left and head downhill. Ignore a path branching off to the right and then a path coming from the left.

(22) At a crossroads, go straight on with the GR®. At a T-junction, turn right and head for the Col des Bagenelles.

(23) Cross the road, turn left and begin a steep descent across the meadow towards Le Bonhomme. When you reach the road again, follow it to the left then head down to the right. Follow the road to the right then rejoin the path on the right. At the road, head straight on towards La Roche. Then continue downwards all the way to Le Bonhomme.

(24) Continue to the main street and turn left to reach the town hall (E).

I went hiking yesterday on this Gr. I was impressed by the hikers' bags. I must admit that walking with a heavy load, climbing steep hills, doesn't really appeal to me. There are websites that give tips on how to avoid carrying too much.
