Rancs, heath and faïsses around Labeaume

Between Baume, Ardèche and Ligne, vast stretches of stony ground have been and are still partly cultivated, with olive trees now reigning supreme.
The former silkworm farms have now been converted into homes but retain their old-world charm.
Along the river, hanging gardens are still maintained and clearly visible on the banks on the sunny side of La Baume.
The Ardèche and Chassezac rivers have created a vast plain where vineyards, fruit trees and gardens occupy the space.

Description of the walk

Access: Coming from the D104, formerly the RN Aubenas-Alès, take the D315 towards Labeaume. The hamlet of Chapias, on the plateau, is noticeable by its tower. Before the hamlet, after the mission cross, a large area on the left with rubbish containers offers plenty of parking spaces.

(S/E) From the car park, take the road towards the hamlet of Chapias (white and yellow signposts). In the hamlet (150 m from the start), a wooden sign on the right indicates "Rocher des Curés" (500 m round trip).

(1) After the chapel, leave the path indicated after about 50 metres and continue along the edge of the field towards some rocks with holes in them.

(2) The Rocher des Curés offers an opening towards a high point that could have been used as a pulpit for preaching. Return to the road and continue on the right.

(3) Pass in front of the Chapias Tower. After 100 metres, at a well, take the signposted road on the left. Continue along the Chemin de Chapias until you reach the road just before Linsolas. Follow the white and yellow markings on the left. After about 500 metres, when the road bends to the left, take the signposted path on the right.

(4) Cross the paved road and take the marked path opposite, to the left of a property gate. Continue to follow the markings, going straight ahead until you reach the paved road. Turn right towards Chamontin.

(5) At the flagpole, continue along the road following the signs, pass the cemetery, descend towards the church and then onto the square, before the submersible bridge over the Baume.
You will reach the hiking pole at the bridge at the entrance to the square after passing the "Faïsses" pole. A visit to the village is a must.

(6) At the flagpole, head towards Saint-Alban-Auriolles, cross the bridge over the Baume and continue up the path.

(7) At the mast, take the signposted path uphill to the right towards the Alphonse Daudet museum. There are chicanes at each end.

(8) At the junction with the road, turn left (the hiking pole is on the other side) towards Saint-Alban-Aurioles via the museum. Take Impasse des Fraysses on the right, then the marked path on the left in a right-hand bend.

Follow the marked trail, which is not shown on the IGN map (the one marked on the map is closed). When you reach the paved road, turn right.
Follow the road (Chemin de La Vignasse), passing in front of the museum. Continue along the road, following the signs. On the descent, take the road on the left, Chemin de Bousseyron. Pass in front of the church in Auriolles. Cross the D208 and take the road opposite (Chemin du Béal).

(9) At the mast, take the path on the left towards Ruoms. Follow the signposted path straight ahead through the vineyards and orchards for about 1.4 km. Leave the first path on the left and then turn left towards the D208. Join the departmental road.

(10) Turn right and continue along the road for about 900m. Cross the Baume on a narrow bridge, head towards the hamlet of Peyroche, then turn left and cross the hamlet.

(11) At the mast, head towards Labeaume on the left. Follow the marked trail.

(12) At the mast, continue straight ahead towards Chapias. Follow the signs to reach the D245. Take the departmental road on the right and after 150m, in the bend, take the path on the left.
At the end of the path, take the paved road on the left, which quickly becomes a path leading to the dolmens.

At the information board for the "Ranc de Figère" site, leave the path to discover two dolmens that are impressive in size (ranc = rock in Occitan).
Return to the path and, at the bend to the right, take the path on the left (signposted).
Continue along the white-and-yellow marked path through the heath. You will cross several paths, but the markings are clearly visible and you should always go straight ahead.

(13) At the mast, continue straight ahead towards Rosières, Chapias. Continue to follow the signs. After 350 metres, cross another track, go straight ahead slightly uphill and continue to the D315 (Croix de Cavagnac on your left)

(14) At the cross, turn right onto the departmental road. A pyramid made of stones from the ground is a reminder of the cleaning work carried out by local residents to cultivate strips of land (faisses). Continue along the road

(15) At the flagpole (mission cross nearby), take the road on the left to return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Practical information

(5) At the mast, there are two options for reaching Labeaume

  1. - continue along the road following the signs, pass the cemetery, descend towards the church and then onto the square before the submersible bridge over the Baume.
  2. - take the path on the right (Labeaume 1.1 km). This is a steep descent that can be slippery.

Be careful not to take this second option after heavy rain, as you will descend to the riverbank below cliffs and the path is not always clearly marked and may be obstructed by trees, branches and debris.
However, there is no risk of getting lost if you follow the direction of the current.
You will reach the hiking signpost at the bridge at the entrance to the square after passing the "Faïsses" signpost.

A visit to the village is a must in any case.

- the Rocher des Curés, where refractory priests hid during the Revolution.
- the tower built at the end of the 19th century by subscription on the initiative of sailors from Toulon, which explains its lighthouse shape.
Labeaume, a village of character that is well worth a visit. Beautiful hanging gardens that can be visited thanks to volunteers. Music festival in summer ("Labeaume en musique")
The Alphonse Daudet Museum at the Mas de la Vignasse, created by Roger Ferlet, a house dedicated to Ardèche traditions and formerly owned by Daudet's maternal family.

A pleasant, varied and very interesting hike. But I shortened it by cutting from point 6 to point 12, starting from the Faïsses car park. This allowed us to swap our hiking gear for swimming gear for a relaxing dip at the end of the hike.
Thank you for sharing this.

I loved the beginning and the end, the views are superb and there are lots of interesting sights. You can climb the Chapias tower for a splendid view. As with the previous comments, if I were to do it again, I would cut straight between points 6 and 12 without feeling like I was missing out on anything.
Thank you for this great suggestion!

superb hike in May 2024.
At the start of the hike to the Curés rocks, there are no signs: at the bottom of the descent, continue straight ahead into the field and not onto the nice path on the right: there is a "private property" sign
between points 3 and 4, there is a self-service goat cheese cabinet. Bring 5 euros to put in the box.
We drove along the Ardèche between points 5 and 6. It's very beautiful.
Picnic at point 6 near the submersible bridge. There are picnic tables. Then return directly from point 6 to 12. Superb dolmens.
thanks for the route

Very good hike, it is well marked, which means (apart from Visorando) you can't get lost. There are different landscapes to enjoy throughout the walk: the town of Labeaume, dolmens, etc.
The only downsides are that, like all the other reviews, I found the section through the vineyards really boring and quite long. Also, the section just after that on the road is quite dangerous, with cars passing close by and driving quite fast, so be careful.

We did the circuit as described and really enjoyed it; there were lots of parish-specific points of interest along the way: the priest's rocks, llamas, the village of Labeaume, a beautiful view from the cliff opposite, dolmens and varied landscapes. It's easy to follow. It is marked in yellow and white all the way. We had a picnic in the Daudet Museum park, which was very pleasant. It's true that the part in the plain is a bit boring and the section along the Ruoms road is a bit tedious. Nevertheless, we highly recommend this hike. Thank you to the author.

Very nice route, although we didn't do the whole thing.
We parked at the mission cross, before the hamlet of Chapias.
Just before the Récatadou hall (hanging gardens), we turned right down to the banks of the Labeaume river, which allowed us to avoid the road and enjoy the river and the view of the cliffs.
We followed the river to the village of Labeaume.
And like 07jacquie, we then cut between points 6 and 12, which didn't make the walk any less beautiful.
We highly recommend this very pretty walk!

the tour was completed on 22 January 2023, a very cold day with strong north winds. The advantage of this tour is that it is sheltered, making it pleasant in these conditions. We started at point 11 approximately and at Labeaume we went to the end of the square to join the paved slanting street and the top of the village, which leads back to the dolmen trail that we followed to our car. This shortened the route but allowed us to see the top of Labeaume. So from point 6 to point 12, the route is marked on the map

Varied landscapes, multiple facets of the Ardèche, interesting. It was fascinating to discover several menhirs on the way back, with informative signs, a real bonus!
One reservation and one suggestion:
A/ Remove a small section of your itinerary after Labeaume: in Champagnac, take the small path towards CHADENEL then AURIOLLES, then the path in the plain parallel to the D208 almost to the bridge over La Baume. This section is uninteresting and likely to be very hot in summer..
B/ and connect point 8 directly to the bridge over La Baume (on the IGN2939OT map) via CHANTRESSAC (small path) and then (tiny path) the CHAVETOURTE farm, a path that arrives at the D 208 100 metres before the bridge over La Baume.
So at point 8, go straight ahead and not to the right, and skip points 9 and 10. When you reach the D208, there is a signpost indicating LABEAUME via this path, which arrives at the D208 200 metres further than your point 10... There is probably a sign for Point 8 on this country trail that you seem to have missed. ..
We didn't take this "shortcut" out of ignorance, but really, as much as your itinerary as a whole is great, this part in the plain is uninteresting. So I think it's worth trying... It would probably shorten the circuit by at least 2 km, maybe even 3.
I hope I've made myself clear, it's not easy..

We modified the route slightly to go down into the Beaume Gorges, as we were already familiar with the village of Labéume. We also skipped the section through the vineyards, given the previous comments, but overall it was a lovely walk! There was also some live music at the open-air café on the left bank of the BEAUME, after the PEYROCHE bridge. Further on towards the dolmens, there was a wild boar hunt, but the hunters were very fair. Be careful though...

An easy route offering beautiful scenery, with the lower section through vineyards that are not particularly interesting. Stop to visit the beautiful village of LABEAUME, and don't miss the viewpoint overlooking the village, which can be reached by climbing a small path that branches off to the right after crossing the bridge. Lots of flowers along the route and very few people. We will definitely do this walk again.

° Route starts and ends in Labeaume, not Chiapas, making it easier to visit Labeaume on the way back
° Just after setting off, add a detour up the hill to the viewpoint (sign on the right of the path) overlooking the Beaume, which offers a superb view of the village
° The flat section is of no interest... but there is no alternative
° the paved slanting streets are superb, and the dolmen site is very interesting (ideal for picnics, among other things)
the last part offers superb landscapes, but is completely exposed, so bring protection and water if the weather is good
° between Chiapas and Labeaume, there is an unusual farm with llamas, vicuñas and goats in a surprising setting... and on the other side of the path, there is a pantry where delicious fresh goat's cheese is sold, with payment to be left in the letterbox...

A very pleasant and well-described hike.
Don't forget to climb the Chapias tower (headlamp recommended) after exploring the site of the priest's rocks.
Shortly after point 5, a quick detour will take you to a platform offering a panoramic view of the village of Labeaume.
It's a shame that the church in Auriolles is closed, as the stained glass windows look interesting from the outside.
