Loop around La Baume at Rosières

This is a long hike that follows the Baume, first along the ledge on its left bank, then high up on its right bank (Falaise de Lunel). The final section, after point (21) , requires a lot of attention as the path entrances are often somewhat hidden, but after (23), the view is magnificent. From (12), you are in the middle of the heath and it can get very hot. I recommend setting off at dawn and taking plenty of drinks with you.

Description of the walk

Start: Rosières, Place de l'Église.
(S/E) Take the steps down to the Route du Moulin. Follow it on the left. At thefirst fork , turn right, thenleft at thesecond fork to arrive near a hut.

(1) Turn left just before the hut and walk along the edge of the field (white and yellow markings). At the end of the field, the path turns right and continues along the edge of the woods. There is a fairly steep climb leading to a ravine. You can cross it directly: it's fairly easy and there's probably not much water, or turn right (narrow passage) just before the ravine and cross the pretty footbridge. Then continue climbing, following the white and yellow markings. At the top, you will come to a three-way junction.

(2) Take the path furthest to the right. Ignore a path on the left and continue to a crossroads. Continue straight ahead to reach another crossroads at the entrance to Chapias (calvary).

(3) Turn right onto the D315 to cross the hamlet. Continue straight ahead. Pass the church (see Practical information), then the entrance to the Chapias Tower (well worth a visit for the 360° view, but bring a torch to climb up). You will reach a crossroads (well).

(4) Take the small road on the right (not signposted). At the fork, turn left and continue to a T-junction. Take the path on the left to arrive near the hamlet of Linsolas.

(5) At the fork, take the pretty path on the right. Turn left onto thesecond path and follow it to a small road.

(6) Follow it to the right (white and yellow signposts). At thefirst bend , leave it and take the path opposite (white and yellow signposts) to reach a multiple crossroads.

(7) Take the path furthest to the right (houses on your left). This path quickly becomes an excellent downhill trail that leads above La Baume. Reach a crossroads.

(8) Take the path on the left overlooking the river with a few low walls on the right (a slightly tricky passage, but no danger). You will reach a fork.

(9) Turn right and continue along the river (white and yellow markings, but few). Approach Labeaume. Near the village, stay close to the river to cross the Jardins du Baou and pass under the village (many paths). Reach the submersible bridge.

(10) Cross the river and, at the fork, take the cement road on the right. This is a steep climb that passes near the viewpoint (it's worth the detour!). At the top, you will reach a T-junction.

(11) Follow the small road on the right for 1 km (a nice rest!) through several hamlets. At the exit of Robert, at the fork, keep right and reach a T-junction (cistern).

(12) Turn right and, 400 metres further on, you will reach a fork.

(13) Take the path on the left (not signposted). You will immediately come to another fork; take the left. Follow the narrow but fairly well-marked path. You will eventually come to a slightly wider path.

(14) Follow it to the right and join a large lane. Follow it to the right and you will quickly reach the main path and the white and yellow signpost.

(15) Follow this path on the left to pass above La Baume. You will reach a T-junction (Falaise de Lunel signpost).

(16) Follow the wide path marked in white and yellow on the right and reach the hamlet of Tourneuse, just after a beautiful pond on the left (hello frogs!).

(17) Continue along the same path to reach the hamlet of Guilhaumon. At the fork, take the left-hand path and pass in front of a large farmhouse (Mas de Guilhaumon) before reaching a crossroads.

(18) Take the path opposite and follow the white and yellow markings, keeping north-west, to arrive near the hamlet of Lauzette: T-junction.

(19) Turn right, heading north, onto an uphill road and continue until you reach a crossroads.

(20) Take the path opposite (gate: close behind you). Start down a beautiful descending path, which should be approached with caution: it is steep and stony and crosses a ravine at the end. Join a small road (gate: close behind you).

(21) You have two options:
The most sensible option: follow the road on the left (white and yellow markings). After about 50 metres, take the path on the left which joins the Impasse du Coulet. At the end, continue straight ahead on Chemin du Freyssinet. Take thefirst road on the right and continue to a crossroads. Turn right to arrive at (26).

More exciting, but less easy (this is the route). Follow the small road on the right for about 50 metres. Find a path on the right that climbs up the hillside.

(22) Take this slightly steep path and rejoin the road.

(23) Immediately turn left onto a path (the entrance is not always easy to see) and follow the winding path to rejoin the road.

(24) Opposite, find the entrance to a new path (not always easy to see, but there are irises just at the entrance). After a somewhat messy start (you may want to bring pruning shears), the path becomes more pleasant. Go through thefirst bend to the left and then thesecond to the right.

(25) Then take the lowest path, just above a meadow, and you will come to the cliff. Turn left towards a thorny bush (blackthorn, which I pruned back in June 2025 and is now fairly easy to get through). Follow the narrow, grassy path to reach a few houses and a small road.

(26) Follow it to the right with the white and yellow markings, which you will find again here. You will reach a crossroads near the river.

(27) Take the path opposite, which leads to the edge of the Baume. Cross this well-maintained ford using a series of footbridges (see Practical information). At the end of the crossing, turn right to reach an overhanging passage (stairs) and join the Route du Moulin.

(28) Follow it to the right. At the fork, turn right to rejoin the steps taken at the start and return to the Place de l'Église (S/E).

Notes

It would be unwise not to wear very good shoes and I think at least one walking stick is necessary.

To my knowledge, there are no water sources, or perhaps in the hamlets between (11) and (12)? However, there is a Bistrot de Pays in Labeaume, about a hundred metres from the submersible bridge.

At the church in Chapias, you can make a round trip to the right to the Rocher du Curé. Atthe first crossroads , go straight ahead (the old access on the right is now closed) and cross a pasture to reach the site.

In summary for the signposts:

  • From (S) to (4): White and yellow
  • From (4) to (6): no markings
  • From (6) to (7): White and yellow
  • From (7) to (8): no markings
  • From (8) to (13): White and Yellow
  • From (13) to (15): no markings
  • From (15) to (21): White and Yellow
  • From (21) to (26): no markings
  • From (26) to (S): White and yellow

(27) If the ford is impassable, follow Chemin de Garel to the left to reach the D104. Follow it to the right to cross the Baume.
Just after the bridge, turn right onto Rue du Moulin and rejoin the (28).

:Good, but too much paved road. Hello, on the 21st I took the trail. But that's not a criticism. I just noticed that for me there's too much paved road. Best regards, Jeannot

Which option did you choose in point 21?

I think there's about 3 km on tarmac (+ the cement track from the viewpoint), half of which is unavoidable in Rosières. That's not a lot on a 20 km route.
