Description of the walk

Park in the Combegrasse car park, on the edge of the D983.

No signposts

(S/E) With your back to the road, set off along the path towards Puy de la Combegrasse. There is an information board at the start of this path. Then turn onto the first path on the right. At the intersection of three paths, turn left, ignore a grassy path on the left and join a road.

GR®® Red and White markings

(1) Turn right, following theGR®®4and 441 markings. Join a track and follow it to the right for a few metres to reach the marker at 1025 m.

No markings

(2) Follow the signs for Espinasse, crossing the D788 with caution to take the path to the right of the farm. Immediately pass a picnic area.

(3) Ignore a path on the left and continue along the left-hand side of the Puy de l'Enfer, covered with coniferous trees. Ignore a path on the right that joins the road, then leave the (closed) access to the old quarry on the left. Further on, pass an iron cross and continue for about 50 metres.

(4) Turn onto the path descending to the left, which joins the Puy de l'Enfer crater called Narse d'Espinasse. The path goes around this marsh on the left and joins a track at the Narse d'Espinasse signpost.

(5) Ignore it and take the path on the left just before this signpost. This path climbs above the marsh and reaches the summit of Puy de l'Enfer.

(6) Continue along the path that veers to the right and ignore a less marked path that branches off to the left. You will reach an intersection at the Les Quairas signpost.

Red and whiteGR®® markings

(7) Take theGR®® marked path on the left. At the fork a few metres further on, keep left and you will come back to the farm, the road and the signpost marked 1025 m.

(2) Walk a few dozen metres to the right along the road and then turn left to rejoin the path you took on the way up.

(1) Ignore the path you took on the way there on the left and continue straight ahead on the GR®®.

No markings

At the crossroads of four paths, turn left, leaving theGR®® markings. You will arrive at an unnamed marker and a picnic area at the bottom of Puy de la Combegrasse.

Yellow and green markings

(8) Turn right towards Puy de la Combegrasse and carefully follow the yellow and green markings. Pass a water catchment area, then an old small quarry. Shortly afterwards, turn left into a meadow, then immediately turn right. Join the path that has been created to prevent erosion of the slope and climb to the left. Reach the first summit of Combegrasse (Chaîne des Puys orientation table) then continue along the path.

(9) At the directional signs, continue for a round trip towards "Panorama sur le Massif du Sancy" and reach the dedicated orientation table on the second summit of Combegrasse. Retrace your steps to the directional signs.

(9) On your return, turn right towards "Retour parking" (Back to car park). Further on, ignore a hairpin bend path on the left and head for the picnic area, then the path at the unmarked signpost.

No signposts

(8) Continue along the path on the right, towards "Return to car park". Ignore a path on the right, then the path you took on the way there on the left, and return to the car park (S/E).

This hike was a pleasant surprise.
Unfortunately, the description was not very clear for us between points 7 and 8 (near the campsite).
Thanks to the map, we realised we had taken the wrong path and turned back (adding an extra kilometre or so to the walk).
Apart from that, we loved this hike in the middle of the Puys, without feeling like we were in Place de Jaude (unlike in some other places...). It was very interesting from a geological point of view, as we crossed the crater of Puy de l'Enfer: the Espinasse narse, and climbed, without difficulty, to the summit of Puy de Combegrasse, which offered us magnificent views of the Chaîne des Puys and its star attraction, Puy de Dôme, as well as the Sancy massif.
Easy parking with a large car park along the roadside and a pleasant picnic area at the foot of Puy de Combegrasse.
