Pueblo de la Solana de Jaca

A lovely circular, starting from Jaca, allowing you to visit the small villages of Solana de Jaca. This route follows rolling tracks, short sections of small roads, and a few short stretches of trails. The tracks are sometimes a little stony, with a few short steep climbs (electric assistance can be useful). You will pass through beautiful villages where houses are being renovated. This route is probably best done in spring to enjoy the beauty of the landscape, as in September the vegetation is rather dry after the harvest. Obviously, if the crops are tall, you need to take particular care to ride along the edges of the few fields you have to cross, so that the activity remains (or returns, depending on the case) well regarded by the owners of the crops.

Description of the route

  • As usual, we set off from the small car park north of the citadel of Jaca. We reached the village of Banaguas via the Paseo de la Cantera, the pretty medieval bridge of San Miguel, and the A-2605 road.
  • Km 4.5. From Banaguas, following a track southwards, we reached another track heading west. Arriving near the motorway entrance, we encountered a short steep climb with loose stones, which seemed to be avoidable by taking a gentler-looking track to the right (not tested, but probably preferable). Continue up this difficult section along a track to the village of Abay.
  • Km 8.9. Abay: cross the village and take the "Camino Ascara-Abay" track, still heading west. Cross the Rio Lubierre on a concrete ford, which was dry on the day (be sure to check the condition of the rivers before setting off on the circular route) to reach the village of Ascara.
  • Km 13.2. At the entrance to Ascara, follow a downhill track to cross the Aisa road and take a track opposite. At the first house, turn right to rejoin the Aisa road, which you will now follow northwards for almost 4 kilometres. Here you will find the A-2605 road, which you will now follow towards Jaca.
  • Km 19.3. Leave the asphalt road and take a track towards the village of Araguas del Solano, where you will see some pretty houses undergoing renovation. You will rejoin the asphalt road just below the village. Follow it to rejoin the A-2605 road, which you will continue to follow towards Jaca.
  • Km 24.4. Leave the A-2605 and turn left towards the village of Canias.
  • Km 24.9. Leave the tarmac road and turn right onto the "Camino Guasillo-Canias". Follow it as best you can (there are a few confusing sections after crossing the small river "Arroyo Castetillo" at a ford or over a small wooden bridge; you can either climb a short but steep track or, as we did, follow the track to the right and cross a field of grain that had been cut that day to reach the path).
  • Km 28.7. Guasillo: cross the village towards the east and, just in front of the church, follow a track towards the village of Asieso.
  • Km 30. Cross Asieso and just outside the village on the road towards Jaca, take a right at the bend onto a path leading to a marl landscape, a very pretty passage through box trees towards the end. You will reach the A-2605 road, which you will follow towards Jaca to climb back up to the town either via the medieval bridge of "San Miguel" or, as we did this time, via the "Puente Nuevo". As is often the case here, return to your vehicle by crossing the old town via the "Calle Mayor" and the cathedral square, stopping at one of the many bars along the way.
