Walk along the Ru in Beaugency

The town of Beaugency, steeped in history, owes its economic development from the 11th century onwards to the water mills used for milling. Following the Ru valley, this walk will take you past historic monuments and through varied landscapes.

Description of the walk

Park on Quai Dunois on the right bank of the Loire in Beaugency.

(S/E) Cross Rue du Quai Dunois, which runs parallel to the Loire, to join Rue du Prateau.

(1) At the junction with Rue du Pont, turn right and then immediately left, following the signs for Château de Beaugency. Pass through the Porte Dunois and walk along Place Dunois between the château and the abbey. Just before the Tour César, turn right into Passage Jacques Nicolas Pellieux, then left into Rue de la Cordonnerie. Leave Rue du Change, pass the Renaissance-style house on your right and turn right onto Rue du Traineau. Turn right at the end of the street, then left opposite the Renaissance-style Town Hall onto Rue du Change, to pass through another gate in the old town: the clock tower. Cross Rue du Martroi.

(2) At the Fork in the road, turn right onto Rue des Trois Marchands, cross Rue Nationale and continue along Rue Porte aux Febvres, opposite. Take the first street on the right, Rue de l’Abreuvoir, and follow it until you cross the Ru.

(3) Turn left onto the pretty path leading to the railway viaduct. Leave the Ru and follow the path to the right until you reach Rue de Beauvilliers; turn left onto this street, which becomes Rue des Marais. Pass the Moulin de Levrault on your left, ignoring the adjacent streets.

(4) At the fork in the road, take the right-hand branch, Rue de Croque Motte, then turn left onto Rue du Colombier, ignoring the various streets on your right. This crosses Rue du Clos Neufs (D918) and eventually joins Rue de Châteaudun; follow this road northwards until you reach Vernon church.

(5) Turn left, ignoring the various adjacent streets. Pass Rue des Quintaux – recognisable by a cross at the foot of a tree – on your right.

(6) Turn into the next alleyway, which is a dead end, on the right. It quickly becomes a grassy track just past the last house. The Chemin des Buissons leads across the Beauce plateau until it meets a cross-track.

(7) Turn left and follow this long grassy path until you reach Rue Basse; turn left onto it and continue to the junction you passed on the way out.

(6). Turn right onto a narrow lane leading to two grassy paths forming a Y-junction. Take the right-hand branch towards the Beauce plateau, leaving the path that runs alongside the riparian vegetation, the Ripisylve. At the T-junction, take the path on the left, pass the cross-path, until you meet the Ripisylve again. The path turns right and joins another path before Les Baltans.

(8) Turn left onto the path leading down towards the Ru. At the hamlet of Les Baltans, take the left-hand lane leading to the dead end, to rejoin the Ru, which you will follow along its left bank. The Ru flows under Avenue du Clos Neuf. Ignore the cross-path; then, just before the hamlet of Vétille, the path veers away from the Ru, turning left to rejoin another branch of the stream, which you’ll follow as far as Rue des Marais. Turn right onto Rue des Marais and head towards Garambault Park.

(9) At the hamlet of Les Marais, continue straight on along Rue Pierre Couverte, then turn left onto the path leading to the park. Walk round the pond and retrace your steps, going round the school on the left. Keep to the right onto Rue Pierre Couverte.

(9) At the junction, turn right onto Rue de la Fontaine aux Clercs. Pass the various side streets on either side until you reach a crossroads.

(10) At the roundabout, leave Rue de la Fontaine aux Clercs and take the Levrault footpath opposite. Cross Rue du Pouet de Levrault. As soon as you’ve crossed the railway viaduct, take the path on the left which leads back to the Ru; follow this, turning right onto the pretty path you took on the way there.

(3) Cross Rue de l’Abreuvoir, continue straight ahead onto Rue Gaston Couté, cross Rue Nationale, and follow the stream via the various stairways, then take Rue du Pont as far as the Loire. This will bring you back to Quai Dunois and the starting point, on the left (S/E).

Notes

As there are no signposts, this walk requires great care due to the numerous junctions, both in the old town and the more recent built-up areas, as well as on the paths along the Ru and on the Beauce plateau.

Worth a visit

The town of Beaugency, with its many historic monuments, is well worth a visit.

We’ve done this walk twice, and both times we took a different route back after Vernon,
Perhaps a few more details about the route would be useful, but it’s still a really lovely walk

Whilst the section covering points 6–7 is a little disappointing, despite the grassy path, due to the proximity of the motorway, the route as a whole remains thoroughly enjoyable. The sections through the historic centre, the outlying ‘neighbourhood’ of Vernon and, finally, along the banks of the Ru are truly delightful.
Thank you!

A lovely walk; you have to look out for the signposts now and then, but with the route description and a map, you can find your way
A few more details about the names of certain streets you come across would be a bonus, even if the names of some streets aren’t there where you’d expect them to be
