Promajna - Sveti Ilija

Sveti Ilija (Saint Elijah) is the second highest peak in Biokovo (1,642 metres). The village of Promajna is the ideal starting point for reaching it. The Biokovo massif is an enormous wall that rises gently from the sea to 3 km from the coast (the village of Bast is at an altitude of 350 m), then rises very abruptly to over 1,500 m in less than a kilometre.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: In Biokovo Nature Park: Sveti Ilija and Lokva

Description of the walk

The start of this hike is in Promajna at "Apartments by the sea".

(S/E) From the apartment, head towards the seafront. Turn right and take the promenade towards Baška Voda. Pass the Azimut restaurant and walk along the marina until you reach an intersection with a path leading inland.

(1) Turn right onto a dirt track and join the D8 road.

(2) Cross the road carefully and take the path on the left that runs alongside the vineyard until you reach the intersection with a track.

(3) Continue right on this track until you reach the entrance to the village of Bast (Church of the Assumption of Mary - Crkva Uznesenja Marijana).

(4) Continue straight ahead through Bast until you reach the intersection that leads to the Church of Saint Roch (Crkva sv. Roka).

(5) Heading east, follow the red and white markings on the right until you reach the last house in the village to join the Bast - Motika path.

(6) Begin the ascent on a fairly steep path. Cross a long, fairly steep scree slope to reach Korito.

(7) Leave the Bast-Motika path and turn left towards Sveti Ilija. After passing through the rocks, cross a long pine forest and reach the small (closed) Osicina refuge.

(8) Continue climbing to the Biokovo plateau to join the BPS (Biokovska Planinarska Staza, or Biokovo Mountain Trail).

(9) Turn left and follow the pleasant BPS trail to an intersection.

(10) Leave the path on the right and stay on the BPS; the Sveti Ilija Chapel is already clearly visible. Finish with a final climb to reach the summit and the Sveti Ilija Chapel (1,642 metres).

(11) Enjoy the 360° view, particularly of the islands of Brac and Hvar. Then return by retracing your steps (S/E).
