Comberoumal Priory

This walk was created by the Pays de la Muse et des Raspes Tourist Office. A very pleasant walk, even in summer, as it is often in the shade. During the season, admire the splendid rosebushes in the streets of Saint-Beauzély.

Description of the walk

Start: Park at the entrance to the village, near the grocery shop. Shaded parking spaces are available along the roadside.

(S/E) Join Avenue Joulou Merviel and follow it southwards to the left. Go past the town hall and straight on to the church.

(1) Turn right up Rue du Barry, following the GR®62: markings are visible on the left as you go up.

(2) At the top, ignore road on your right (you will return on it) and take the path in front of you, still on the GR®. Through the gardens, you can enjoy the view over the whole Muse valley. Continue through the woods to reach the D171, which you take on the right for about 300 m.

(3) At the end of the left-hand bend, after the cross and the bridge, take the path on the right. At the end of the path, you'll find a cross and a fountain.
End of the GR®. Take the small road to the right, then turn left around the priory to reach the church entrance: this is private property, but visits are possible.

(4) When you leave the church (at least with its doors behind you), go straight ahead along the garden wall. Cross a small clearing and follow the path around a bend to the right.

(5) At the first intersection, go straight down towards Saint-Beauzély. The paved path is lined with box trees: this is an ancient Roman road from Rodez to Millau. Further on, ignore the track on the left and continue straight ahead to reach a fairly steep cement track. This leads to the Rue du Barry, which you took on the outward journey.

(2) Follow it to the left to reach the church.

(1) Turn left onto Avenue Joulou Merviel, pass the town hall and return to the car park (S/E).

The Château de Saint-Beauzély, dating from the 12th and 16th centuries.
The village of Saint-Beauzély, clustered around the church, is made up of beautiful sandstone houses. The Porte de la Madeleine and the Passage du Voultre are also worth a visit.

Most of the route is through forest. There is a beautiful priory along the way, which can be visited free of charge. We had to open a gate that was blocking the Roman road on the way back to the village.

The ascent along the mule track and the descent along the Roman road are very beautiful.
The priory itself is less interesting.

A short, easy hike that we did to complement the Castelnau-Pégayrols hike. We were in the shade the whole time, which was very welcome on this day of 2 October 2023. No difficulties encountered.

pleasant little hike as there is a lot of forest
look out for the church, go straight ahead into the clearing, follow the path, when you reach the top look out for your appliance as the foresters have passed by

The starts and finishes in the village of Saint-Beauzély are pretty, but after that, the walk is reduced to a pleasant stroll through the forest, which is appreciated when the weather is hot, with its shaded sections.
