From La Cadènéde to Les Aumières

A family walk that takes you along the edge of the Causse plateau.
Keep one eye on the Millau Viaduct and the other on the magnificent fortified farm of La Cadénède. You’ll cross a ‘bouissière’ and take a well-deserved rest by the stone-built fountain at Les Aumières Basses.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park near the Millau shooting range.

(S/E) From the car park, follow the road to the telecommunications pylon.

(1) About thirty metres from the pylon, turn right onto a steeply sloping path. At the three-way junction, take the path furthest to the left (not shown on the IGN map).

(2) Take the path (barely marked) on the right. Continue straight ahead. At the first Y-junction, keep right. At the T-junction, take the left-hand branch. Keep right at the next junction.

(3) Continue straight on along a barely visible path not shown on the IGN map. When you reach a junction with a wide track, turn left. At the wayside shrine, turn right. Continue for about 350m.

(4) Take the “bouissière” on the right (path through the boxwood). Pass in front of the Fontaine des Aumières. You will come out onto a tarmac road.

(5) Follow the tarmac road to the right for about 50m, then turn right onto the dirt track that descends towards the telecommunications pylon.

(1) Continue straight on to reach the shooting range car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Things to see along the walk:
- The view of the viaduct and the Plateau de France
- Château de la Cadénède: a former fortified farm dating from the13th century, now home to a superb lodge.
- The Bouissière des Aumières: a ‘bouissière’, a term derived from Occitan meaning a path flanked by hedges of boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) which once provided shelter for travellers. Repeated attacks by the box tree moth (a caterpillar that feeds on boxwood leaves) have stripped these magnificent shrubs bare.
- The Fontaine des Aumières with its troughs for watering livestock.

Make sure you follow the route on the app carefully, as there are no signposts on the ground
Avoid doing this walk on a really hot day as there are few shaded sections
Otherwise, it’s a nice little walk, ideal for taking a dog as there aren’t many people around

One difficulty along the route: near the Cadénède farm, the path is blocked by a fence with no designated crossing. You’ll need to climb over it (it isn’t electrified) to rejoin the path a little further on.

The route isn't marked at all; there are loads of paths because there are trail routes
Without the app, it’s very difficult to do.
Once we reached the heights, there was a lovely view of the viaduct, but after a long stretch through tall grass, we arrived at the Maison de la Cadenède
We did this hike with a teenager and we absolutely loved it, phew

I strayed a little from the exact route, covering only the section around La Cadenède. With so many paths criss-crossing the woodland, it’s hard to know exactly where you are, but with a bit of a sense of direction, it works out fine – it’s hard to get lost.
A lovely route, quiet on this Sunday afternoon, but judging by the tracks on the ground, it seems to be quite popular.
Thanks!

A walk in the hills above Millau – not particularly interesting; there are lots of electricity pylons and, despite the view of the Causses and the viaduct, the setting isn’t great

A lovely family walk offering interesting views of the Millau Viaduct and the fortified farm of La Cadenède.
At the end of the walk, a visit to the village of Peyre is well worth a detour

We’ve already been to Peyre. It’s absolutely stunning; we tend to just wander off on a whim, if I may say so. We climbed right up to the top via the gas pipeline and then made our way back down to the Tarn – it was brilliant. We’re from St Jean du Bruel and we love exploring all the trails and shorter hikes. As long as we’re out and about, we’re having a brilliant time, and this afternoon’s walk from Cadenède to Les Aumières was brilliant!

Thank you for your comments; they are a great source of encouragement.
I’m afraid I can’t invite you to visit my little village of Peyre, 6 km from Millau.
Unfortunately, I haven’t yet found the time to post a route there.
However, do wander through the village streets, admire the cave church, the communal oven, the houses set into the limestone cliff (tuff), not to mention the viaduct and a thousand other treasures waiting to be discovered.
Best regards

A lovely little walk – we followed your directions to the letter. There were paths everywhere. It’s a shame about the box trees; it looks rather sad. We arrived just as the sun came out – quite unusual for February.
