Submersible bridges and Serre du Cocu

A circular with varied landscapes that uses the beautiful paths created and maintained by the municipality of Gravières.
This route is impossible in heavy rain as the Chassezac river can cover La Pontière.

On 29 May 2024, there was quite a lot of water at La Pontière, but it was still possible to cross (I preferred to take my shoes off anyway). The weather forecast is looking better, so conditions should improve.

Description of the walk

Large car park opposite the church in Gravières.

(S/E) Head towards the church. Just after it, take a path downhill on the right (marked in yellow). At the T-junction, turn left towards the cemetery. At the end of it, turn right to reach the D113. Cross it to take the opposite side and take the first street on the left.
You will reach a crossroads.

(1) Go straight ahead (well marked in yellow) and descend towards the Chassezac.
A little further down, turn right (yellow arrow on a stone on the ground) to reach La Pontière. Then cross the river over the small bridge.
Pass to the right of the old bridge pier to reach a chaotic slab. Cross it diagonally to the left towards a rectangular road sign where you will find theGR®® 4.

(2) Follow it to the right through the undergrowth and eventually climb back up to the D413. Keep to the right to reach the foot of the church.

(3) Turn right to climb up to the church, go around it and join the crossroads via the other road.

(3) Cross the D413 to take the path opposite and you will immediately reach a fork. Take the right-hand path (it looks like you are entering a property) and follow the path (Chemin de la Planète) that runs along the wall. You will eventually reach a small road which you follow to the right until you reach a T-junction.

(4) Turn left (Chemin de la Basse Rivière).
After about 500 m, turn right to descend towards the Chassezac. Cross the submersible bridge on the left and continue along the small road (GR®®4), which you will follow for a while.
Just after the hairpin bend on the left, turn right onto the GR®®. After about 400 m, look for a path on the left.

(5) Leave the small road and take this path (well marked at the start). At the fork, keep right and continue on theGR®® until you reach a small road.
Follow it for a few metres to the left to enter the hamlet of Les Maisons and reach a calvary on the left.

(6) Turn right onto a path (stillGR®®4): arrow La Côte du Pont. Reach a slightly wider path and follow it to the right.
A little further on, it turns left. About 200 m further on, you will reach a fork.

(7) Leave theGR®® which branches off to the left. Continue straight ahead (arrow for Les Vans 2 km), cross a small road and reach Chemin de la Jeanne. Follow it to the left.
At the first crossroads, keep to the right (Chemin les Armas Hauts). Continue downhill to reach a T-junction.
Turn right onto Route de Champfagou. After about 300 m, the road slopes to the left before reaching the D113.

(8) Cross it and continue straight ahead on the central reservation to join the D901 opposite the campsite. Cross over to take the Pradal climb opposite (and it's uphill!). When you reach a crossroads, cross the small road to take the path opposite and you will arrive opposite a power line.

(9) Take the hairpin bend to the right and climb towards a reservoir.
Continue on the right path (it is vaguely marked) on a slight incline towards the west.
Magnificent view on the left and information panel.
Further on, the path turns south. Cross a track and you will reach a T-junction.

(10) Turn right (signposted; towards Croix de Bancillon) to reach the Alauzas farm. Just after the farm, turn right and then immediately left (towards Croix de Bancillon). Just after the footbridge (go under it), head straight on towards Bosc. Now follow the yellow markings.
A wild and difficult path (downhill) eventually joins a small road. Follow it for a few metres to the left, then turn right through the woods. Join the small road again and follow it downhill to the D901. Follow it to the left until the first right-hand bend (sign for two crossroads).

(11) Turn left onto the path that climbs back up to the main road. Cross it and take the small road opposite, heading towards Le Bosc for about 400 metres.

(12) Just before reaching the hamlet, take the wide path on the right (signposted: direction Chazalette). Heading roughly east, you will reach the hamlet of Les Garidels. Follow the small road on the left and, just before the houses, take the path on the left (it is well signposted). This is a pretty passageway between the houses.
A little further down, turn left, cross a first stream (ford) and then a second, often dry, stream before reaching a small road.

(13) Follow it to the right and you will immediately reach a fork.
Take the small road on the left (Chemin du Champbarbier) and, at the first bend, leave it to take a path on the right. Cross a road, continue straight ahead and you will come to a wall.

(14) Head towards the house on the right. A gate (close it behind you) and a staircase lead to the D313.
Follow it to the left. At the fork, turn left towards Gravières Bourg to reach the large car park opposite the church (S/E).
