A car park has recently been built just before the cemetery,
(S/E) Take the small tarmac path that climbs up opposite the car park,
(1) After 210 m, turn right towards “Bois de Morgue” (sign). Follow the path to the D94 road.
(2) Cross the road and follow the path opposite for 135 m. You’ll rejoin the D94 road; follow it to the right for just under 200 m.
(3) Leave the road and take the path on the right (blue signposting).
At the first fork, the blue signposts direct you to turn right.
(4) You’ll come to a wide path; turn right, then you’ll see the blue signpost shortly afterwards – follow it towards “Chanaux”. Ignore the adjacent paths.
(5) Turn right onto a wide, gravel path towards “Plateau des Charmilles”,
(6) Follow this wide path. When you reach a junction where four paths meet, take the one on the left, towards “Lompnas” (still following the blue markings). The path is then somewhat overgrown for a few hundred metres but remains passable,
(7) If you wish to visit the cave, at the point where large white stones lie across the path and another to the right of the path, head left into the woods (the path is clearly visible in the woods, but a GPS or Visorando app with the route track is recommended); a very narrow path winds through the woods, which you follow to the cave (see the note in the practical information section).
Take care as you approach the cave; the path becomes very narrow and there is a risk of slipping (not recommended for children).
(8) A beautiful cave (prehistoric dwelling) where a narrow passage cuts deep into the rock, where the temperature is freezing (torches essential).
A few bats may take flight when you arrive. At the end of the descent into the cave, you can climb the smooth, slippery rock in front of you, followed by a narrow, low passageway in the rock, to reach a beautiful and fairly large cave with stunning, highly reflective stalactites and stalagmites. This second section, which is lower and narrower, is more beautiful than the initial descent.
Follow the same route back to the main path
(7) Continue your walk by turning left.
(9) Turn left onto the path (signposted ‘Caution: cliffs’) which descends through the woods to the top of a cliff. Caution: do not get too close to the edge.
On your left, enjoy a sweeping view of the villages of Marchand and Cerin. Far below, on the horizon, the snow-capped Alps can be seen. On your right, take in a sweeping view towards the Bugey and Lyonnais plains.
(10) Retrace your steps along the same path back to the signpost.
(9) Turn left (signposted ‘Lompnas’),
The very narrow, steep and stony path descends for about 700 metres.
At the end of the descent, you’ll come to a wide path; turn right onto it.
At the next junction, carry on straight ahead.
At the next junction, turn left onto the path that descends back to the village of Lompnas, your starting point
(11) When you reach the entrance to the village, turn right to reach the car park (A/D).
