Pinéa and Charmant Som via the Vermorel trail

A very beautiful circular route that connects two of the peaks overlooking the Col de Porte via a picturesque and relatively uncrowded route. The peaks and ridges offer superb views of the Chartreuse and the surrounding massifs: Vercors, Dévoluy, Taillefer, Oisans, Grandes Rousses and Belledonne.
As the climb is mainly in the shade, this hike is ideal in hot weather and presents no technical difficulties; however, care should be taken on the Vermorel trail.

Description of the walk

See the practical information for parking.

(S/E) From the car park, take the wide forest track that climbs steadily southwards. After a wide left-hand bend (east), the slope levels out and you arrive at the Fontaine Claire crossroads.

(1) At the sign, take the path on the right, which is initially covered with wooden sleepers, a bit like a toboggan run. The track climbs south-southwest and arrives at a turning area for forestry tractors. Look for the "point 1321m" sign opposite where you came from.

(2) At the sign, leave the logging tracks and head towards Planfay, continuing down south-southwest on a sunken path that descends straight into the valley and joins the forest track just before the Girieux hut. Pass the hut and you will come to a signpost indicating the Vermorel trail on the left.

(3) Turn left (east) to follow the forest track that climbs up alongside a meadow. At the top of the meadow, the track veers right (south) and a yellow arrow on a wooden post quickly indicates the start of the Vermorel trail on the right. This narrow trail is marked with yellow lines and ends at the foot of a cliff. Turn left to go around it via steep hairpin bends and reach the top of the obstacle.
The trail then heads southwest along the top of the cliff (be careful not to slip on the roots or clay), then winds south to reach the northeast ridge of La Pinéa. From there, follow the ridge trail (blue dots) southwest to reach the summit.

(4) From the summit of La Pinéa, descend via the normal route (yellow lines), which first heads south and then turns north-east. Pass the first signpost marked "Sous la Pinéa" and follow the ridges to a second signpost at a place called "Plénom".

(5) Then follow the direction of Charmant Som, marked in yellow and red, which follows the ridges of Montvernet and Montfromage, generally to the north. This path crosses the Charmant Som road at the Orgeval oratory. Follow this road north to its terminus at the Charmant Som farmhouse inn.

(6) Turn right opposite the inn and follow the wide path eastwards to the base of the southern shoulder of Charmant Som. Once you reach the shoulder, the path turns left, heading due north and climbing steeply to the secondary summit. Pass the secondary summit and a mini-pass to reach the summit.

(7) From the summit of Charmant Som, retrace your steps to the mini-col and take the path descending south-west then west through the meadows bordering the north cliff of the mountain, see location photo. Stay on the path closest to the cliff and ignore any paths branching off to the left. This will take you to a mini valley that descends to the right towards the cliff. Follow the path that passes through it and go through the cattle gate to reach a ridge slightly below an altitude of 1,700 metres. Turn right onto this ridge (east), which then descends in a circular pattern to the north to join the valley of the Casse de Pré Batard. A small cairn — barely visible — below the ridge indicates where to descend.

(8) At the small cairn, take the track on the left (due west) through the scree, which descends steeply on the left bank of the ravine. Once you reach the rocks, the path becomes less steep and crosses a small group of trees before reaching the clearing at the base of Pré Batard.
Then turn left onto the right path, which descends the valley to the west. This path passes two water sources before joining the Cochette path.

(9) Turn left (south) onto this path and follow it to the Col de la Charmette (do not follow the signs for Saint-Pierre!).

(10) From the Col de la Charmette, take the track that climbs south towards Fontaine Claire. This track quickly becomes level. Be careful, as the path, which is quite wide at first, tends to disappear into the grass in the wettest areas. There are tracks that allow you to get around these, but you must always return to the main track.

(1) Once you reach Fontaine Claire, take the forest track you took on the way there (west) to descend to the car park (S/E).

Notes

?️ Park in the car park on Route de la Charmette, N 45.312168° / E 5.73287°. By clicking on the Google or Waze link, you can enter these coordinates directly into your favourite navigation app. It is possible to shelter your vehicle from the sun by driving up the forest path for about 50 metres to park under the trees that line a large turning area.

For once, water is available, which is rare in Chartreuse: at Fontaine Claire (1), at the farmhouse inn (6) and at Fontaine de l'Oursière shortly afterwards (9). However, the flow rates are low.

? Dogs are allowed in this part of the Chartreuse, except from June to October in the Charmant Som mountain pasture.

?‍♀️ The difficulty of this hike lies exclusively in the elevation gain of over 1,000 metres. ⚠️ However, caution is advised on the Lucien Vermorel trail, named after a young member of the CAF who died there in May 1926 after slipping on the clayey path.

? The hike is short and not suitable for bivouacking.

? Standard hiking equipment is sufficient. If it rains less than 24 hours before the hike, it is advisable to bring an ice axe for the Vermorel trail (very slippery and steep clay).

? The IBP statistics for my route give a distance of 15.81km, a cumulative elevation gain of 1185m, a walking time of 4:00:59 and an average speed of 3.94km/h.

? Orientation is easy. The IGN topographic map is a little less inaccurate here than usual, but a GPS — or of course the Visorando app — is recommended to avoid getting lost.

⚠️ As is often the case, the IGN topographical map is inaccurate or out of date in several places. Here, it ignores the well-marked paths leading to Chamechine and shows the Vermorel path several times at more than 100m from its actual route. In general, it is best to remain critical of IGN topographic maps (in my experience, the institute never corrects reported errors, even after serious accidents caused by these errors — see my profile for more details and an example). The OpenStreetMap is much more accurate in general, but Visorando would need to decide to use the OpenTopoMap version for it to be user-friendly.

Worth a visit

? Chamois are often present in the Casse de Pré Batard valley and the upper forest to the west of the plateau below Charmant Som, but you have to go early in the morning to see them.

? The views from the summits are magnificent. See this interactive photo.

? Several variations are possible.

  • You can start from the Col de la Charmette (10) instead of the car park on the Route de la Charmette, provided, of course, that the road is open to the pass, which is rarely the case before the end of June.
  • It is also possible to climb to the summit of Charmant Som via its western face. To do this, after the inn (6), climb northwards up gentle slopes to reach the western shoulder of Charmant Som. The northern side of this shoulder is a cliff, see this photo for reference. Climb up the shoulder due east via the good path that runs along it, reaching the col that separates the summit from the secondary summit, then the summit (7).
  • You can also descend from the summit of Charmant Som via Chamechine, especially if you have climbed up the western face as described above. In this case, from the summit (7), continue along the path that winds down to the north, making a wide circular loop to the left (west) below the summit of Chamechine and rejoining the point (8) from the north. Use the OpenStreetMap Rando map, as the IGN map does not show any paths.

A "casse" is a pile of rocks or scree. A "sangle" (masculine) is a path that is mostly level or almost level, which passes through cliffs or steep slopes to go around the mountain.

A fairly challenging hike to the summit of Pinéa. Best done during the dry season as the path can be muddy. At the Charmant Som cross, I descended via the chimney (caution!) and then rejoined the trail.
The return trip is a bit long.
The views at La Pinéa and Le Charmant Som are fantastic.

Took 5 hours, including a 20-minute break. The start is very poorly signposted. Using "Go to starting point", the GPS took me onto the road to Planfay until I reached the barrier on the Route des Girieux! Admittedly, I could have read the details on the information sheet more carefully, but when I finally parked at the side of the road (five or six real spaces) (two and a half kilometres after the toll gate), it was only when I started climbing that I discovered there was a "car park" on the turning area. I recommend starting from the Col de la Charmette: it's shorter, less steep, and, most importantly, you avoid the endless, tedious, bumpy, muddy track, even in dry weather, to Fontaine Claire at the end, when you're already exhausted, and then the descent back to the car park. Otherwise, this was my first ascent of the Pinéa via the Vermorel trail (I didn't see any prohibition signs anywhere, since the owner recently decided to imitate his colleague, the Marquis de Quinsonas-Oudinot...), which was pleasant and without any difficulty. The final scramble to reach the Pinéa is very nice and allows you to descend via the normal route to complete a real loop. The ridges of Mont Fromage, the road to the bottom of the Charmant Som and the ascent of the latter are not particularly interesting. At the top, there's a crowd, but otherwise it's the world of you. I hesitated during the descent after point 7, as the description is vague: you have to head straight ahead through the grass to reach the small grassy valley. The GPS track removes any doubt. The small cairn is almost gone, but with a little attention, you can see that you have to turn left. I broke in new shoes and the trails are very varied. In terms of scenery and challenge, there are much better options. But overall, it's a nice loop that is well marked and has no pitfalls for training.

PLEASE NOTE: the Charmette Pass road is closed.
I parked at the end of the Planfay road, which is a 200-metre climb and an extra 4 km. But this hike is well worth it! Follow a forest road, then at a right-hand bend, continue straight ahead: a sign for "Baratière" indicates that La Pinéa is 3.2 km away. The trail is not marked on the IGN map, but is marked in yellow. Then join the forest track before reaching point 3 (Girieux).
Below Charmant Som and up to point 8, there is still snow. In the section where you pass under the cliff, you need to be careful and cut steps. In loose snow, it goes quickly.

Superb hike with magnificent views from both peaks. I recommend doing it outside of the summer season as it is very busy from the summit of Pinéa to the summit of Charmant Som (how sad that they built a road that goes all the way up there).
The Vermorel trail is pretty and very pleasant (and absolutely no one on this part).
Be aware that the climb to the summit of Pinéa is not long but quite vertiginous. It is possible to access it via the trail on the other side (the one taken during the descent in the normal direction of the hike).
I recommend using walking sticks for the descent in the scree (8) as it is quite steep and the terrain is unstable. The cairn to access this part is not very visible.

The climb up to La Pinéa via the Vermorel path is magical and not very busy. I can confirm that the ground is slippery, so be careful if it has rained the day before. Le Charmant Som is very busy (the road goes right up to the foot of the hill) but the view is magnificent, especially of the Carthusian monastery.

We started this hike directly from the Col de la Charmette (no more parking spaces available...).
It was a very beautiful hike, during which we spotted a couple of chamois in the woods (?) during the ascent. Even though the Charmant Som is very busy due to road access to the chalets, the view is magnificent.
Two comments, however: the climb was difficult, not because of the elevation gain, but because of the rain the day before, which made the trail very slippery, and the descent through the valley requires a GPS.

A very beautiful hike, with a magnificent view from the summit of Pinéa. A lovely walk then to the Charmant Som pass.
However, point 8 is not visible, we missed the fork and came back down via a different route.
Despite this, it was a really beautiful hike. Thank you for sharing this route.

A very beautiful hike with magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding mountains!
Ascent to Pinéa in welcome shade, beautiful ridge line and lovely descent from Charmant Som via the combe!
Lots of people on the peaks and ridge on this beautiful day, but no one on the ascent or descent!
Cairn at point 8 visible if you pay attention. Very precise description!
Thank you for the itinerary!

A very nice hike. We couldn't find the starting point on the way there, so we started from the pass, which allowed us to avoid the round trip. It was great to climb two peaks in a row. On the way back, we couldn't see the cairn at point 8, but luckily we had a GPS, so we turned back quickly.

It was a wonderful day.

Hello
I did this route on 21 July 2019 (it was very hot, reminder: take plenty of water)
Beautiful route – no danger in dry weather – but as usual, you have to stay alert – VARIED LANDSCAPES – the charming Som is a real highway, but before and after, it's much quieter

I just wanted to point out that the trailhead at point 8 is not very busy and the cairn is barely visible, so you have to be very focused and keep an eye on your GPS, as you can walk right past it without seeing it
