Pic Saint-Loup via the diagonal route on the north face

A very beautiful walk, fairly short but quite strenuous. Please note that some sections are steep and are not recommended for those prone to vertigo.

Description of the walk

Park in the small lay-by at a hairpin bend on the D1 at the Col de Fambétou, accessible from Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers or Saint-Martin-de-Londres. The pass is situated between the Pic Saint-Loup and the Hortus.

(S/E) From the pass, take a path heading south-east towards Pic Saint-Loup. If you look at the north face, you can see the green diagonal line of vegetation leading up to the summit. Follow a rocky path that crosses a dry stream bed, then climb gently, veering slightly to the right, until you reach a fork.

(1) Take a steep path to the left, usually marked by a large cairn. The path is marked on the ascent by scattered, rather old green markings and small cairns. However, the route is fairly straightforward as it climbs directly upwards. Continue straight on at the base of the scree slope and carry on to the start of the Diagonale Nord, which is easier to spot if you have looked at the route from a distance.

(2) Be careful: just before the actual start, there is a false path that can lead to the Diagonale but is more overgrown. As you progress, it is often necessary to use your hands for some light scrambling (around grade III). At the end of this climb, you emerge onto the magnificent ridge line, where you must turn right to reach Pic Saint-Loup.

(3) The summit is marked by a fire lookout post. The views to the south and north are truly superb. However, you won’t be alone, as the paths coming from the south are much easier and very busy. Continue along the ridge line, which is a bit steeper but fairly straightforward, descending towards a rocky pass. Follow the path to a point marked by numerous coloured markers.

(4) Take the path that drops off to the right. Hard to spot at first, it soon becomes clearer thanks to freshly painted green markings (September 2024). It winds its way down a fairly steep slope, though less so than the diagonal path. You’ll reach a small scree slope.

(5) Descend this and continue through the forest on a pleasant, albeit steep, path, which leads onto a good path to follow to the right. Reach a junction and make a short left-right turn to follow the path that leads back to the original junction.

(1) Turn left onto the path you took on the way out to return to the car park by the roadside (S/E).

A really lovely walk – tough, but interesting – I highly recommend it; it’s something out of the ordinary!

Having done it a few times in the past just for the view, I decided to do it twice in a row for the exercise.
From a sporting point of view, the trail has something interesting about it, even if your ankles do take a bit of a beating: it’s a very, very stony path which spoils the fun a little. And it’s also very touristy. It’s the sort of hike that attracts all kinds of walkers, even those new to the sport. You’ll never be alone, even if you set off at dawn, and rightly so, as the peak offers the most beautiful view of the department.

This is a hike my daughter and I had been wanting to do for a long time. And on 8 May, the weather was good, so it was the perfect opportunity. The ascent via the northern diagonal isn’t particularly difficult, except for the final stretch before reaching the ridges. There’s a section that requires some climbing, and it’s important to be aware of this before setting off. It’s doable, but it’s no longer just a hike (see photos).
For the return journey, we continued along the western ridge so as not to descend via the Chemin des Éperons, which is quite steep going down (going up, it’s easier than the northern diagonal as there’s no climbing).
We had a brilliant day and met a few people who like to get off the beaten track.
Magnificent views.

Stunning views, though some sections are more like climbing than hiking (a bit of scrambling). Not recommended if you’re prone to vertigo.
The climb is quite enjoyable with a few short sections of scrambling. Standing at the foot of the cliff, a helmet seems a good idea.
The section along the ridges is very pleasant.
I felt less confident on the descent (the ground and stones were often unstable), so it was less enjoyable. If I were to do it again, I’d follow the ridges westwards until I reached the path that descends to the base of the cliff. It adds to the distance but perhaps not to the time taken. From what I remember, you get a better view that way.

Just to let you know that I’ve checked all the GPS coordinates and they’re correct.
I did warn that this trail is not recommended for those who suffer from vertigo.
I know dozens of people who have done it, and whilst there are indeed sections that can be quite daunting, they aren’t particularly difficult.
And I had a friend read through the ‘for the faint-hearted’ section, who told me I was overdoing it

This is a very dangerous route; I think we took the wrong path, but luckily we found a way round to avoid that climb. It would be better if you removed it from your list.
