Pic de L'Estanyo from Canillo (Andorra)

Pic de l'Estanyo is the second highest peak in Andorra (2,915 m). The view of the other peaks in Andorra is magnificent. It is accessible from Sorteny or Ransol for the most well-known routes. It can also be accessed from Canillo, which is the subject of this guide.

This is a long hike with a significant elevation gain. The trail is generally well marked up to Estany Gran, then you have to follow the cairns and the trail where it exists.

Description of the walk

The start is in the centre of Canillo.

(S/E) Pass the church (on your left) and then the French Lycée (on your right), following the Riu de Montaup. Continue along the steep concrete path.

(1) When you reach the road, take the path a few metres to the left that follows the stream on the left bank and meets the road a second time.

(2) Leave this path and follow the road uphill. The road is wide and there is little traffic, even in high season.

(3) Just after the hairpin bend to the left, take the path on the right that leads to Bordes de l'Armania.

(4) Once you reach the ruins of the hamlet of Bordes de l'Amiana, continue along the path heading north.

(5) Cross the stream below and follow the signs for Pic de l'Estanyo. The path climbs up to a ruined chalet.

(6) Be careful at this point: take the path that climbs directly (on your right) and not the one that stays level. You will arrive at another chalet, which is still in use.

(7) Cross the enclosure (small stone wall) until you reach a path a little higher up. Take it northwards (on your left). The path is then almost flat and leads to the Vall del Riu refuge.

(8) Continue to the right of the refuge. The path then climbs steeply until it reaches a plateau. Take a break to regain your strength, as the climb continues shortly afterwards to reach the source of the Riu du Vall del Riu. You will reach the first lake just after the scree slope.

(9) The walk over scree is not too long. Just after this, you will discover a second lake and then the Estany Gran du Vall del Riu.

(10) Take the trail heading due north. Cross an area of scree before reaching a fourth lake.

(11) Continue north-northwest, following the trail.

(12) Pass to the left of the last lake and begin the climb up the ridge, heading north-west. There are a few cairns and, at times, a faint trail. Take care in this area, which is steep and gravelly. Reach the ridge and a path coming from Pic de la Cabanetta.

(13) Follow it to the left towards Pic de L'Estanyo (west-southwest). When you reach a flat area, take the trail in front of you and slightly to the left. One last rocky climb and you will reach the summit.

(14) Enjoy the breathtaking view of the great Andorran peaks. Then, take the same route back down to begin your return journey.

(4) At Bordes de l'Armiana, follow the path that passes to the left of the hamlet and then goes around it below to reach the hamlet of El Vilar.

(15) Go around it from above. Continue on the path to the left of the access road to the hamlet. Be careful, if you inadvertently take the access road to the hamlet, you will arrive at a private residence where access is prohibited and the gate may be closed.

Join the main road at a small car park. Turn right to return to the town centre (pavement all the way) and your starting point (S/E).

Hello everyone, opinion of a holiday hiker and amateur runner for the past 10 years,
A long and difficult route completed in 9 hours and 20 minutes, including a lunch break. Ascent in 4 hours 30 minutes, very difficult descent in 4 hours 50 minutes. Well-marked except for two stages: the one at the chalet under renovation (August 2023) on stage 7, where you must not follow the yellow markings or turn right, and after the last lake where the markings disappear just before the final peak. The climb through the scree is difficult and requires caution, as does the descent, which is even harder without any real support. The trail between the last lakes is not very visible, so follow the stream to make it easier.
The view is magnificent and the cold wind blows strongly from the lakes. It's a pleasure once you arrive. There is no drinking water supply, so bring 2 to 3 litres with you.

I just did this hike today. As a beginner, I was motivated to do it. When I saw "difficult" written on the app about this hike, I thought it would be fine because I'm a pretty athletic person.
Well, I wasn't disappointed... I've never been pushed to my limits so much.
-The start is very tough up to point 3, so you really mustn't be afraid of climbs.
-From point 3 to point 6, it's very easy, similar to a short walk.
-From point 6 to point 9, it gets quite tough, but I found it still manageable.
-From point 9 to 10, you really have to start hanging on because it's quite difficult with rock falls, etc.
-From point 10 to 11, it's fine. I've seen worse with what I've done before.
-From point 11 to 13, it's fairly easy, just a walk around the lakes.
-From point 13 to point 15, that's where the hike really begins. There's a 220m elevation gain over a distance of 700m... I can tell you that I took a lot of breaks and that it was tough going...

In summary, it's a great hike that I recommend for people who are reasonably fit. I don't think complete beginners will manage it, unless they camp overnight. Be very careful where you put your feet, as few of the rocks are very stable. Bring a light jacket for the summit as it gets a bit chilly. Also bring plenty of water. I ran out at the summit with a 1.5 litre bottle, so bring at least 3 litres.

The hike took 9.5 hours: 6.5 hours to climb up and 3 hours to climb down. We took lots of breaks, including a 20-minute lunch break.

Enjoy your hike, everyone!

Hello, everyone! A very beautiful hike offering stunning views of all the surrounding Andorran peaks (with a sea of clouds as a bonus for the lucky ones).

The hike took about 9.5 hours over two days with a bivouac (see end for those interested), including breaks and at a relatively slow pace due to the bivouac equipment.

The start of the hike from Canillo is very steep. The rest of the hike alternates between flat sections and gentle slopes, ideal for resting your calves, and steep climbs.
At crossing point no. 13, we cut directly from the last lake to the end of the ridge/start of the peak, without going via the start of the ridge and without joining the path "coming from Pic de la Cabanetta". The slope is steeper than the basic route, there are no cairns to guide you, and the stones/gravel are quite slippery, so you may need to use your hands at times. This is a more challenging route for those looking to spice things up, but not recommended if you are tired.

Bivouac: we pitched our tent at Lake Estany Gran (passage point no. 11). It is a bit windy, so make sure you hammer your tent pegs in well. There is not much flat, non-rocky ground to pitch your tent on at the lake: it's OK for a 2-person tent, but if you are camping with more people, look for a spot at the previous or next lake.

Hello, everyone.

Nice climb. For my part, I started from the heights of Canillo (N 42.572058° / E 1.599445°), at the last hairpin bend (last turn). You can park on a dirt road...

It's a shame you can't do a circular route (I think it should be possible to head south-west towards Casamanya from the summit...). If anyone knows the answer, please let me know.

You have to be observant after the lakes to find the trail(s). There are numerous cairns.

You end up at 2915 m, high up in the mountains. It's a desert of rocks.

A footbridge is being built along the way. It will be very spectacular.

This hike was really great!! The view from the top is incredible, I highly recommend it! (It took us 7½ hours, including a picnic, with my three friends – we are all 22 years old).
We tried to follow all the instructions given, but we still got lost twice (it was probably partly our fault!):
- for point (3), you have to leave the trail as soon as you pass the hairpin bend, and not follow the yellow dots that continue on an uphill trail.
- For point (13), which mentions a final lake to go around on the left, note that it is not the lake just above the large lake, but the one after it!
Another thing: from the large lake onwards, there are no more yellow dots to follow, only cairns. The climb up to the pass is quite difficult, but it can be done by taking the grassy path.
Enjoy your hike!

Superb hike with very few people. The start is a bit tough, but after that everything is fine (a succession of flat sections and climbs).
Once you pass Estany Gran, the trail becomes intermittent and there are few cairns. However, this is not a problem as everyone can choose the safest route for themselves. The view from the summit is well worth the effort.
