Description of the walk

From the D941, in the centre of Fontaine du Berger, follow the D773 towards Ternant for about 500 metres and park in the hikers' car park on the right-hand side of the road.
Montlachat sign at the back of the car park.

(S/E) Return to the road, cross it to reach the yellow directional arrow and follow the direction "Croix de Ternant" through the wooden gate. Follow the path for about 150 metres, then look for a wooden passage in the fence on the right.

(1) Take it and climb up between the broom bushes. There isn't really a path, but head towards the pine trees and rocks. Go over this small hill and then descend towards Croix de Ternant.

(2) When you reach the foot of the cross, follow the path to the left. You will soon come to a T-junction with a path (opposite, there is a gap in the fence, but do not take this path) and follow it to the right. Further on, after a wide bend in the path to the left, you will find a gap in the fence on the left.

(3) Take this passage, climb straight up to the summit and reach it at the level of two rocks. Continue in the same direction to descend.

(4) About 100 m from the summit, you can turn left to join a path through a gate. Otherwise, as on the route, continue on the southern pasture to find the road and the car park (S/E) opposite.

Beautiful views of some of the Chaîne des Puys peaks from the summits, and a wide, less beautiful view of the north of the Clermont-Ferrand metropolitan area from the cross site.
The Croix de Ternant was built by "Père Ferrandon", a disabled veteran of the First World War. It is 20 metres high and is used as an FM broadcasting tower!
