Between the Chaîne des Puys and the Limagne

Set off from the foot of the volcanoes and descend to the old Hercynian base of the Plateau des Dôme, right on the edge of the Limagne fault, in peaceful countryside alternating between crops, woods and pastures. There are some beautiful views of the puys to the west and Clermont-Ferrand on the Limagne side to the east.

Description of the walk

Not far from the Fontaine du Berger, park in the Parking des Goules car park, on the edge of the D941.

(S/E) From the yellow directional signs at the car park entrance, take the path towards Puy des Goules. You will soon come to a wider path, which you should follow to the left. Walk alongside the forestry buildings until you reach a crossroads.
Do not follow the directions indicated by the yellow signs, but enter the field in front of you and continue along the fairly well-marked path, heading east-northeast (during the summer grazing season, this field may be closed, as indicated by a sign on the gate. In this case, refer to the description of the alternative route in the practical information section). On the other side of the meadow, you will come to a gap in the fence.

(1) Take this to reach a path, then cross the passage directly opposite, which leads to the next meadow. Walk along the fence on your right for a few metres, then, a few metres to your left, you will see another passageway that leads out of the field. Take this passageway, note a yellow "Ternant" sign that has fallen to the ground, and continue straight ahead on the path that descends quite quickly towards Ternant.

On the outskirts of the village, pass by a house and take the path that connects this house to the road (you will feel as if you are on private property, but the path is public because, when you reach the road, you will see a yellow sign for "Croix de Ternant" indicating the direction you have come from). Cross the road and take the path opposite, which leads to the road below, Route de Sarcouy. Cross and continue in the same direction, taking Rue de l'Église Neuve, slightly to the left opposite.

(2) At the end of this street, at the crossroads, cross Route de Chanat and take Rue du Sous opposite. On your right, below Route de Chanat, you will see a fountain and wash house. A few metres further on, at the intersection, continue left, still on Rue du Sous. In the bend, a few metres further on, you will see another fountain. Continue to the end of this street to reach an intersection with three paths at a fire hydrant. Take the path furthest to the right.

(3) About 850 metres further on, before passing under a high-voltage power line, the path turns left. Further on, at the junction with another path, continue straight ahead. At the next intersection, 100 metres further on, continue to the left. Shortly afterwards, the path crosses a stream (more or less visible) and turns right.

Continue straight ahead, ignoring the paths on the right. Near the first houses in La Mouteyre, the path becomes paved and is called Rue des Sagnes. Continue along this street. Shortly afterwards, you will see two streets very close together on the left. Take the second one (the two streets rejoin further on) to discover the hamlet's fountain further on.

(4) Continue along the street (Rue des Monlades), which turns right and leads to some farms. At the fork (bus shelter), continue right on Rue du Sou. At the next intersection, at the transformer and information sign, continue left, still on Rue du Sou. Further on, pass a hospital on your right, then a water pumping station on your left. Join the D775.

(5) Follow it to the left for about 100 metres, then, in the bend, look out for small yellow (Les Trois Villages) and green (Le Grand Vert) signs pointing to a path on the left. Take this path which runs alongside the D775. Further on, rejoin the road and immediately turn left, still following the yellow and green signs.

(6) At the intersection with another path, continue to the left. Then ignore all the paths on the left. Further on, on the outskirts of Chanat-la-Mouteyre, the path turns right and then passes below a cross.

(7) Just after this, at the junction with Rue de l'Église, look for the yellow and green signs and continue to the right. Leave the church on your right and, just after this, you will see a beautiful tree on the right, in the grounds of a large house, the Château de Chanat. Ignore the streets on the right and take the first street on the left to find the village fountain and wash house. Continue along Rue des Vardis, ignoring the alleys on the left. Shortly before reaching another street, continue left for a short climb and you will come to a crossroads with a fountain.

(8) Turn right and then take the first street on the left, Rue de la Crouzette, at a large white and green cross. You will also see yellow signs (Les Trois Villages) and green signs (L'Andésite). Shortly before the stadium, at the crossroads, continue straight ahead to walk alongside the stadium. Just after the stadium, ignore a path on the left, which is not shown on the map.

(9) Further on, at a fork, turn left. Continue straight ahead on this path, ignoring the paths on the left, until you reach a T-junction.

(10) Turn left, following the green markings (Andesite). Continue straight ahead, ignoring the paths branching off to the left and right.

(11) At the crossroads with a road, continue straight ahead and then, at the fork just after, keep left.

(12) At a crossroads with multiple paths, continue straight ahead, ignoring two paths on the left and two paths on the right. After about 300 metres, you will reach the forestry operation. Continue straight ahead on the path you took on the way there. A little further on, be careful not to miss the path on the right, at the wooden sign on your left, which leads to the Goules car park (S/E).

Notes

Moderate difficulty hike, fairly easy, standard hiking equipment required.

Summer variant: Continue straight ahead, walking along the meadow on your right. You will come to a crossroads where you will pass on your return (12). Turn right and continue until you find access passages to the meadows on the left and right. Then follow the description and route from (1): "then cross the passage directly opposite...", for the alternative route, this is the passage on the left.

Located between the Limagne fault and the Sioule valley, the Dômes plateau is a relief that rises 700 metres above the Limagne plain and on which the volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys have "settled". Although this relief resembles a plateau, it should not be forgotten that it was originally a mountain range formed nearly 350 million years ago. Due to several hundred million years of erosion, the range has flattened to form the plateau we know today.

We used GPS, which was necessary at certain times.

Thank you, micann4850, but don't worry, the software is intelligent enough to automatically calculate the total D+ and D-. However, there are many different ways of doing this, and each GPS brand has its own method. This explains why we may see different results. In general, the differences are not huge.

The elevation gain is the sum of all ascents, not the difference between the lowest and highest points. The elevation gain for this hike is 349 metres.
