Grand Knoll, Clierzou and Pariou starting from the Fontaine du Berger

A beautiful circular route passing through three peaks with stunning panoramic views and lovely sections in the forest, starting from the centre of Fontaine du Berger, a car park that is less busy than Parking des Goules. The Visorando app is recommended as some paths are not marked. Very busy in summer.

Description of the walk

At the Fontaine au Berger, park in the car park of the old barracks.

(S/E) Head west, with your back to the D941, between the buildings of the old barracks. At the fork in the road, turn left.

(1) At the intersection of three paths, take the middle one, slightly to the left. This is the Chemin des Gouris (shepherds), but there are no signs on site.

(2) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead until you reach another crossroads, with Chemin de la Roche Pertuisade on the left and Chemin des Gravouses on the right, still with no signposting.

(3) Turn right (GR®89 red and white markings). Continue along this path until you reach the crossroads with a fountain and a hiking signpost. This is where the GR®4 and GR®441 paths meet.

(4) Leave the path to Puy de Dôme on your left and the wide track to Puy Pariou on your right and continue straight ahead on the GR®.

(5) At the T-junction, leave the GR® and climb to the right. About 250 m further on, follow a path on the left, which is poorly marked at first but then becomes clearly visible. It passes below the Petit Knoll caves on the right. You will arrive at a pass with paths leading off to the right (towards the summit of Petit Knoll) and to the left, towards the summit of Grand Knoll.

(6) Make a round trip to the summit of Grand Knoll, on the left, to enjoy a beautiful panorama, especially of the Cliersou caves, your next stop.

(7) Retrace your steps.

(6) Turn left for a beautiful descent. At the bottom, look for the path marked by a sign that leads up to the caves and the summit of Cliersou.

(8) Climb up to the caves on the left (a slightly steep passage). After the caves, continue along a circular path. Beautiful views. Back at the caves.

(9) Descend via the same route you took to climb up.

(8) Continue to the left. At the T-junction with a wide path, turn right. You will arrive at a crossroads.

(10) Take the stairs on the left that climb to the summit of Puy Pariou. At the top, enjoy the beautiful panorama, then continue along the crater to the signpost indicating the path down to the Goules car park. (Access to the crater is prohibited, as is a complete tour of the crater; the IGN map needs to be updated.)

(11) Take the path on the right that descends into the forest.

(12) At the T-junction, turn right. Further on, you will reach a crossroads very close to the D941 and the Parking des Goules car park.

(13) Turn right.

(14) After about 650 metres, turn left onto a path. Continue along this path until you reach the old barracks (S/E).

Beautiful panoramic views. The Petit Knoll and Cliersou caves were used by the Romans to build the Temple of Mercury on the Puy de Dôme.
