Description of the walk

Park in the large car park in front of Chalet Reynard

(S/E) From the car park, head towards Chalet Reynard and take the wide path that climbs up to the right, marked in yellow. 150 metres further up, continue to the right towards Le Signal and Le Mont Ventoux. The path leaves the valley and begins to climb for about 1 kilometre until it joins the ridge path.

(1) When you reach the Le Signal sign, turn right onto the ridge path towards Pas de la Frache and Combe Brune. This path, marked in red and white (GR®4), begins to descend gently, passes the Combe Brune sign in the middle of the pine trees, then continues straight ahead on the stony path towards Col de la Frache.
When the path becomes grassy, go around a barrier on the left to come out onto a paved road and the Pas de la Frache sign.
Leave the markings and climb up the tarmac road opposite, which leads to a platform. Cross the platform (preferably on the left as the path is better) to reach a narrowing and the path opposite. At the end of the path, a cairn marks the start of the trail on the left.

(2) Turn left and take this path, which descends through the pine trees for 600 metres. It crosses two clearings, then at the third, look for cairns on the left.

(3) Turn left and follow the path heading west towards Mont Ventoux and down into the forest.
This fairly wild trail will cross the forest for more than 3 kilometres, along the mountainside, sometimes uphill, sometimes downhill, with no other trails branching off. It eventually comes to a fork on theGR®9. Turn left for 20 metres to reach the Serres Gros sign.

(4) Take the path that climbs steeply to the left, marked in yellow, towards Chalet Reynard and Tête de la Grave. It climbs through the forest and ends in the scree at the summit, joining La Tête de la Grave and theGR®4.

(5) Turn left to descend towards Chalet Reynard. After 100 metres, leave theGR® and take the path that descends to the right (marked with a red and white cross and a yellow cross), continuing to follow the red stakes (markers for snow). There will be no more markings, but the path is very visible and leads to a small car park at the side of the road 1 kilometre further down.

(6). Take the path that branches off to the left between the posts and heads towards the start of the ski lift. Just in front of the ski lift, take a path on the right that joins the D974.
Continue left on the road and return to the car park (S/E).

Hello, I did this route today, 09/08/24, with my wife. A lovely outing with no difficulties. Ideal for a morning.
However, the description needs to be changed: at level 3, the information saying to follow the path heading east towards Mont Ventoux needs to be corrected. In fact, it should say west
THANK YOU

Did this with an 8-year-old child, no particular difficulty. The route is challenging but offers magnificent views from start to finish. You can reach the summit from point 5 (adds 7 km there and back).
A magnificent hike to be repeated.

Hike completed on 20 February 2023 in 4 hours and 15 minutes (including a 10-minute break and photo stops) with good equipment and, above all, essential walking sticks. I do not recommend this hike for children. From point 3 to point 5, there are dangerous sections, especially with snow and sometimes slippery ice. Even without snow, it seems dangerous to me as there are only rocks. There are many sections along the side of the mountain. People who are afraid of heights should not attempt this hike! Between points 2 and 3, it is impossible to find the path without GPS.
Otherwise, the scenery is very pretty with views of the snow-capped Alps and pleasant passages through the undergrowth. The dangerous sections do spoil the fun, though.

Great hike with my family and my children aged 9 and 6
My partner was a little scared of heights on some parts of the trail, but it was well worth the effort, with the reward of the view from the top before heading back down
We had a picnic in the woods before tackling the rockier part
I highly recommend it, a wonderful memory

Very beautiful hike! I agree with the reviews: magnificent panoramic views, uphill and downhill sections, steep paths, woodland trails, particularly pleasant in this hot weather, but best avoided when the mistral wind is blowing. Bring fly repellent!

Superb hike, short in distance but intense! We have done several hikes classified as difficult in Ardèche and this one would be classified as difficult in our opinion (i.e. no flat sections, it goes up or down! Lots of slopes on part of the route between 3 and 4).
We thoroughly enjoyed the day, even though we set off very late (12.30pm!) but didn't suffer from the heat.
It was 21 degrees when we arrived at Chalet Reynard!
There were many magnificent panoramic views, beautiful seasonal flowers and very few people!
We'll be back this summer to hike in the area!

Magnificent hike on Mont Ventoux with breathtaking views! The route was very well described (we didn't read it properly at the start and followed the valley instead of the ridge and couldn't find the sign straight away, but we were able to easily correct our mistake!). It was very wild and, on that day, Ventoux really lived up to its name! No chamois that day!
We'll definitely do it again, in a different season perhaps.

Hello Laure, regarding the chamois, even though the area is classified as a nature reserve, during hunting season, the chamois retreat to the Fontfiolle drovers' road.

This is because some bloodthirsty individuals, who claim to "love nature and animals", send their dogs to the edge of the reserve to flush out the chamois so they can shoot them...

Best regards,

Jean-Marie

A lovely hike, much of it through woods. Magnificent colours in autumn and beautiful views of the Alps. We missed the signpost at the start of the hike and followed the bottom of the valley instead of taking the path on the right-hand side of the hill. We easily found the trail again once we reached the top by following the GR signposts. At point 4, you need to head west, not east. The section in the woods on the north side is a bit slippery at this time of year, so make sure you wear suitable footwear. There are a few impressive passages for children in the scree. We didn't see any chamois ! Overall, very good!

A very pleasant hike, completed in three hours, during which we did not suffer from the heat on Sunday, 4 August 2019. The view from the platform was splendid, and the forest trail was very gentle. Thank you.

A beautiful hike in glorious weather with just a slight north wind on the ridges. Stunning views with the snow-capped Alps on the horizon.

Done in summer, arriving around 11 a.m. on a scorching day with temperatures reaching 35°C in the valley but only 21°C at the Reynard chalet and 23°C on our return from the hike in the early afternoon. As for the hike, the route is easy and mostly shaded, with gentle slopes. The only difficulties are a few stony descents and some very leafy passages where you can slip. Otherwise, there is a variety of undergrowth with encounters with chamois and beautiful views of both sides of the Ventoux.

Thanks for sharing. Nice hike, but I had to spice it up a bit! When I got to the top of La Grave, I turned right for a round trip to the summit of Mont Ventoux (it took me two hours).
At point 5, I chose the same route as on the way up, which was wilder than the one suggested
