Via the Oratory of the Three Virgins from Wentzwiller

The route starts at the car park by the church in Wentzwiller, a pretty little village typical of the Sundgau, a region in southern Alsace. A lovely walk with beautiful views over the Rhine Valley and Basel.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park in front of the entrance to Wentzwiller Church, a church with a half-timbered bell tower – a very rare feature.

(S/E) Take Rue de l’Église (marked with Red Disc and Blue Disc signs) and cross the bridge over the Altenbach stream.

(1) Turn left onto Rue des Sources. Continue westwards along the tarmac track until you reach a crossroads after the pumping station.

(2) First turn right then left onto the country lane, cross another stream and reach the D16, with the old wayside cross on your right.

(3) Cross the departmental road with care and continue straight on up the hill (marked with Red Disc and Blue Disc signs) to the highest point of the walk.

(4) Turn left onto the forest track known as the “Balcon du Sundgau” (marked with a Red Disc) and continue along this track until you reach the D12b4.

(5) Follow it to the left, then take the path running alongside the road, where there are benches from which to admire the view of Basel.

(6) Turn left, enter the forest and follow the Chemin du versant Sud until you reach the D16.

(7) Turn left and walk alongside the road for about 300 m (make sure you stay close to the edge). At the first cross, turn right and
follow the path towards the Oratoire des Trois Vierges, a mystical pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages.

(8) Continue along this path (marked with Red Rings), follow the Stations of the Cross to Rue de l’Église at the entrance to Wentzwiller and head right back to the car park in front of the church (S/E).

A very beautiful hike on easily accessible footpaths with no difficulties. I think it would also be suitable in winter, with little elevation gain and a lovely circular path, first on an open plateau and then a pretty forest trail with superb views from viewpoints 5 and 6, which have tables and benches. At point 7, you walk about a hundred metres along the main road, but there is plenty of space on both sides to walk safely before turning right towards the Oratory.

A lovely little walk, with no particular difficulties. Much of it takes place in the woods. There’s a lovely view halfway along the route. Take great care at point 7 when walking alongside the road. The estimated time given is quite conservative.

A short, leisurely walk suitable for all abilities. The picnic spot after point 4 no longer exists; the only one is at the Oratory of the Three Virgins.
