The new starting point is at the cemetery, which avoids any neighbourhood disputes.
(S/E) Leaving the car park, with the cemetery on your left, turn right onto the path heading south-southwest. You will reach a fork at an elevation of 634 metres at Col de la Croix.
(1) Continue straight ahead (west). The path is quite rocky but does not present any major difficulties.
(2) You will come to a path coming from the right; turn slightly left (south-west).
(3) At the fork, take the path on the right (west) to elevation 730, at Goulet de la Verrière.
(4) At the crossroads, it is impossible to climb the ridge that leads to Serre de Leyrier.
Take the path opposite that descends into the woods. Ignore the paths on the left.
(5) At an altitude of 600 m, take the path on the left and continue downhill through the woods. You will come out onto a small road.
(6) Follow it to the right. At the crossroads that immediately follows, turn left. In a left-hand bend, leave the road and take a path that branches off to the right at an acute angle.
(7) At the next intersection, turn left. Enter the hamlet of Vaneilles and, at the T-junction, turn left. At the end, turn right.
(8) Immediately afterwards, turn left at the hairpin bend (follow the signs for Le Chambon-de-Bavas then Serre de Gruas). Go up the winding road and cross the D265 road. Ignore a turn-off on the left.
(9) At the next junction, turn right. Ignore a turn-off on the left and, in a right-hand bend, take the path that branches off to the left. Join the D265 road and follow it to the left (west).
(10) Above the village of Le Chambon, leave the road and take the path on the left that climbs to the edge of the forest. Then take the first path on the right and, at a fork, take the path on the left. At a T-junction, turn right and you will immediately reach an elevation of 514 metres, at another fork.
(11) Take the path on the left. Then take the first path on the right and climb the switchbacks. Return to the path you left at the previous point and follow it to the left.
(12) At a fork, take the left-hand path. Then take a sharp left turn to cross the Ravin des Biousses. Join a small road.
(13) Follow it to the right. This will take you to Croix de Gruas at an elevation of 778 metres.
(14) Take the first path on the right. Then ignore a path on the right. At the T-junction, turn left to reach the ruins of the Saint-Quintin farm, a building reminiscent of the region's farming history.
(15) Turn sharply left and follow the main path north-northeast. You will come to a track; follow it to the right. Ignore a turn-off on the right.
(16) At a hairpin bend to the right, continue straight ahead on a path towards Grand Bois. Follow this well-marked path which winds through the woods.
(17) At a fork, at elevation 611, turn left, heading due east. The path climbs and narrows, turns north and joins a fork passed on the way out.
(3) Turn right and retrace your steps to return to the cemetery car park (S/E).
A lovely, pleasant walk among the chestnut trees... Several beautiful viewpoints. I would happily do it again with my group (this was a reconnaissance walk the first time).
