The tour starts at Schmollensee station on the Usedomer Bäderbahn (UBB).
There is parking available directly at Schmollensee station; at the end of the tour, you can then walk to Bansin station and take the train back to Schmollensee, or you can park in Bansin on Fischerweg and take the train to Schmollensee in the morning.
(S) Starting at Schmollensee station, we first walk along the platform towards the road junction, cross the tracks and walk along the footpath beside the country road Am Klosterdamm towards Pudagla. As soon as the footpath ends, we turn half-right into Schloßstraße.
(1) We can see Pudagla Castle. Here, we take the narrow, cobbled footpath to the left, which brings us back to the main road. We follow this for a few metres to the left, cross the road and turn into Am Glauben. After a short while, the path becomes unpaved; we follow the forest track into the woods. At a fork (not shown on the map), we keep to the left and the path leads us towards the tip of the headland, where there is a rest area.
(2) This is the turning point; we continue our walk along the shore of Lake Schmollensee, past another rest area with a view of the lake.
(3) We reach the edge of the forest and eventually the tarmac cycle and footpath running parallel to the Landstraße Ausbau. We walk along this to the left until we reach the junction signposted ‘Bockwindmühle’. We follow the road to the left, slightly uphill, past the car park, then left again, and we have reached the Pudagla post mill.
(4) We head back to the car park; at the bend, we turn left onto the dirt track and now walk along the fenced-off property known as ‘Am Mühlenberg’. We ignore all turn-offs and initially keep to the side of the fence. The path eventually turns to the right and we walk alongside Lake Schmollensee, which glimmers through the trees to our left.
(5) We have reached the road ‘Am Fuchsberg’ and thus the hamlet of Stoben. At the village junction with the bus stop, we turn left, continuing to follow the road ‘Am Fuchsberg’ as we walk along it towards Benz.
(6) At the old church, we turn right into Kirchstraße, past the fire station, straight on across the junction into Mühlenweg, cross the car park and then follow the signs for Holländermühle, taking the path and the steps up to the left to the mill.
(7) We head back, going down the steps again and across the car park, then turn right at the junction onto Fritz-Behn-Straße, which we follow for a few hundred metres to the junction at Am Schwalbennest. Here, we take the footpath to the left, reach Selliner Weg and walk first along a paved path, then later along a lovely sandy forest track into the woods. We ignore the first three turnings. The path then takes us a short way along the edge of the woodland; at the next fork, we take the left-hand path and then keep to the right.
(8) At this clearly identifiable, offset crossroads, we take the left-hand path, which leads us to Sellin.
(9) We reach a rest area. From here, we follow the cobbled village road downhill and, at the next fork, turn right. The road is now tarmac. We eventually reach another junction with a view of the lake.
(10) Here, we turn left towards Schmollensee. We follow the path – with the lake to our left and holiday homes to our right – into the woods, passing a few allotments on our right. We keep the lake in sight as we walk alongside it.
(11) At the next signpost, carry on straight ahead along the unpaved, sandy forest path, initially uphill for a few metres. To our right, the Großer Krebssee now glimmers through the trees. We keep straight on for now and, at the second junction, turn slightly right towards the lakeshore.
(12) We return to the last junction and now turn sharply right; the path climbs a little more steeply. We reach another junction and turn left, heading slightly uphill. We reach a T-junction and turn right.
(13) The path takes us along the railway tracks to a level crossing; here we cross the tracks and the Ahlbecker Chaussee (caution: heavy traffic) and walk along a paved path, first round a complex of buildings and then, in a gentle right-hand bend, into the woods. At the next junction, we turn right at a right angle, past a clearing with a dilapidated barn. At the end of the clearing, we reach a T-junction; here, we turn left. Our route now follows Friedhofsweg in a long left-hand bend along the edge of the woodland, with the cemetery to our right.
(14) The path then becomes a narrow, unpaved forest track, which we continue to follow until we finally reach a fork and, with it, the Fischerweg, where we turn left.
(E) We have arrived at the car park of the Hotel Villen im Park.
If you need to get to Bansin railway station, as soon as you reach Fischerweg, turn sharply right onto it, then left twice, and you’ll reach a junction by the Lidl. Go straight across it; Bansin railway station is on your right.
