Moulin du Saut and Moulin de Tournefeuille mills

Beautiful course, above and in the Alzou valley, visiting two mills: the Moulin du Saut (fortified mill of the 12th century) and the Moulin de Tournefeuille.

Description of the walk

(S) The starting point is the car park along the D840, 250 m before the intersection with the Departmental Road No. 36 coming from Gramat and near the aerial adventure park but on the other side of the big bend (to the right).

From the car park, cross the D840 and take the small road downhill. Go under the railway track and turn left. Head along the railway track and at the level crossing (1) turn right.
Follow the path on the plateau that will gradually descend into the valley. At the bottom, at the intersection (2), turn right to get to Moulin du Saut. Do not hesitate to take the path down through the Moulin du Saut to the waterfall below.
Turn back and return to the last intersection. Continue on the path along the valley, cross the bridge and go up the opposite slope.
Arrive at the upper car park (3), turn right onto the path along the cliff towards Rocamadour. Enjoy magnificent views from the top of the Alzou Valley and the Moulin du Saut.
After about 200 m along the ridge, take the path to the right (4) which goes down into the valley. Pass the site of the Moulin de Tournefeuille and take the path that goes right (5). After about 400 m, leave the path in the valley to take the left path that climbs up to the plateau. At the top, continue to the railway track (6). There is a barn on the right. Take the path to the right and walk along the railway. Arrive at the small bridge, pass under the railway to the left and cross the D840 to reach the car park at the starting point.

Practical information

With the agreement of the author of the hike, we add this statement:
There is a GR route between the two mills (this is also the classic hike) but this a variant that tours the mills and the valley from the Le Causse, along the plateau above.

In the nearby area

Close to the starting point (200 m away), on the other side of the big bend there is an aerial adventure park and the Gouffre du Saut de la Pucelle. Beneath the aerial adventure park course. Entry is permitted and free. It is a chasm into which small stream that is very popular with cavers disappears. Beautiful natural site.

Also note the natural camping site in “Ferme Estay" 400 m further on.

A superb hike, already familiar from the valley; the return trip over the top of the cliff is spectacular and so characteristic of the Alzou canyon. All the more enjoyable because the Moulin du Saut waterfall was flowing at full capacity, which is rarely the case in summer. It was a magical moment, with the stream standing out against the ruins of the mill. The only problem is that it's very busy, especially as the car park on the cliff provides very quick access to the Moulin! The hike is not suitable for people with joint problems who are afraid of steep gradients! In that case, you'd be better off doing a round trip in the valley from Rocamadour.

It's such a pleasure to run this route, with its flat, uneven terrain, sunshine and shade, it's perfect.

We never tire of doing it again every year...
Even better in April and May when there's water...

A very nice walk along pretty paths lined with stone walls on the first part.
We followed the route, but came across quite a few people who simplified it by following the bottom of the valley and thus passing from point 2 to point 5.
This avoids going up and down the causse but deprives us of some very fine views.

To complete this mill walk, a visit a few kilometres away to the fortified mill at Cougnaguet is a real pleasure (especially if Hubert is there to comment on it).

A very pretty route, with a variety of points of interest.
The paths are easy to follow but still wild enough to allow you to meet the local wildlife: deer, squirrels, etc. The views are superb.
The mills are well worth a visit, and the one at Le Saut is truly unusual.
Thank you for this beautiful route!

Superb itinerary: taking you up onto the causse after passing the Moulin de Saut (don't forget to do the reverse as indicated) is a very appropriate initiative. The total drying up of the Alzou is a calamity...

Starting out from the pretty hamlet of Roumégouse, this route is superb both in the valley and on the plateau;
It's a succession of cliffs, viewpoints, mills, low walls, bridges... in a remarkably unspoilt and natural setting;
Over 14 km of walking in an enchanting setting (using the GPS app, we modulated the GR 6 + 2 circuits - also well signposted).
Lunch break at the Tournefeuille mill.
Hiking shoes essential.
Wet environment: moulin du saut and some parts of the paths are really slippery (poles very useful!).
Things to see, things to do.... and things to see again .... and things to do again...
At this time of year, the panorama from the top of the Causses is splendid.
On 💚

Nice hike, we finished with 9km, no water in the Alzou and therefore at the mill, accompanied by the goats for a stretch, beautiful views, ascent to level 5 without shade, so a bit hard if done in the afternoon.

I did the shortened version of this route having parked my car in the car park on the other side of the Alzou near marker 3 at "La Méjancerie Basse". We started on the ridge and ended up along the Alzou and the superb ruins where we had a picnic. It's a very beautiful walk.
This loop version allows you to enjoy the views first and to keep the children interested as soon as you get down to the Alzou river bed and the mills.
Enjoy the walk.
