With its crumbling Genoese tower, picturesque narrow streets, vaulted passageways and fishing harbour, the village of Erbalunga is a renowned holiday destination, brimming with charm and poetry. Situated on the east coast of Cap Corse, this picturesque listed site has inspired many local painters who have come to capture its spirit on canvas. Brando’s marina welcomes you to a setting suspended in time. From the village of Erbalunga, you’ll head inland from the coast into the Corsican mountains towards Silgaggia, then Castello and finally Mausoleo, before returning to Erbalunga.

Description of the walk

Park in the Erbalunga car park before the town hall. It’s a pay-and-display car park but quite large and not very busy, so you can arrive at any time.

(S/E) Head towards the sea to join the main road, then turn left and follow it until you reach the junction with the Chemin de la Plage, which branches off to the right and marks the end of the village.

(1) Ignore this and turn left onto Montée du Couvent, towards Cintolino. Pass two hairpin bends, go straight on at the junction, then climb the steps on the right towards Terre Rosse. Once on the road, head to the left.

(2) Leave the road and take a small path on the left.

(3) At the junction, turn left again and carry on to Silgaggia.

(4) At the entrance to the village, turn left and head downhill towards Castello. Make your way to the Genoese bridge next to St Anthony’s Chapel.

(5) Follow the road down to the junction with the D54 and continue downhill to the left. Before reaching Mausoleo, turn left off the main road and head towards the village via the church; the road is no longer tarmac, but you’ll rediscover the authentic charm of the villages of Cap Corse. Continue downhill to rejoin the D54 and turn left.

(6) Turn right to cut across a bend in the road, then carry on straight ahead. You’ll come out onto Chemin du Mont Carmel, about 150 m from the cemetery on your left.

(7) First turn right then left then right again to follow the Route des Jardins d’Erbalunga. Then turn right into the wooded area to return directly to the car park (S/E).

The Chjassu di u Cunventu is a village loop trail that allows you to discover Farinole and its breathtaking landscapes. Starting from the Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian, the route passes through the village before reaching the maquis. It runs alongside the Marianda convent, then takes a panoramic path from which you can see the marina and the Genoese tower of Farinole. Finally, the path rejoins the forest canopy before returning to the village.

Starting from Barbaggio town hall (heading downhill), the Chjassu Napuleone crosses the village before entering a forest, where you can see old agricultural gardens on either side of the path. The richness of this route continues when you take the "imperial road" that gave the trail its name. Before becoming emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte is said to have walked this road. The trail can also be taken in the opposite direction (uphill), starting from the bridge at the intersection of Strada San Petru and Strada Napuleone. If you are only doing a one-way trip, i.e. not returning, remember to leave one car at the starting point and another at the end.
