Los Cahorros de Monachil

Circular route in the Sierra Nevada, starting from Monachil. Steep climbs, suspension bridges and tricky sections over the river (crouching position, using metal handholds for support). Breathtaking scenery.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park east of Mochanil. Arrive early to get a space. By around 11am, the car park will be full.

(S/E) Head east, ignore two roads on the right, and reach a fork.

(1) Turn left and take a very narrow path which climbs, at times steeply, and which can be easy to miss. You may need to walk through water or mud at this point. The path then becomes a stony track. You’ll reach a wide track.

(2) Turn right onto this wide white track, which descends towards the south-west, and ignore a road on the left, then another on the right. You will reach a bridge over the Rio Monachil.

(3) Turn right and cross the first suspension bridge. Then follow the narrow path along the river. Stick to the path leading downhill. The path will sometimes require you to crouch or hold onto metal handrails fixed to the cliff face. There will also be several suspension bridges.

(4) Pass a hydroelectric power station and turn off north-west to reach the village.

(5) Take the road on the right to return to the car park. You can cut across the bends via steeper roads or wide tracks. Arrive at the car park (S/E).

Important closure notice – please read!!
A superb and incredible hike.
The start (between point D and no. 1) is a bit tricky to find in the tall grass; you don’t necessarily need to follow the GPX track provided here to the letter – there are better-defined paths nearby, and more importantly, they avoid walking through water. After that, it’s fairly easy up to the first footbridge crossing the Rio Monachil.
Warning: following the severe weather at the end of winter in Andalusia: from the footbridge crossing the Monachil for the first time (point 3), the path heading downstream along the Rio Monachil is closed as a section has been destroyed. Closed between point 3 and the large footbridge.
The sign on a small barrier clearly states in Spanish that proceeding is at your own risk.
We did so in full knowledge of the risks. As expected, the route along the aqueduct wall is impressive, requiring you to crawl or crouch, and to pass over the torrent using metal handholds set into the rock. Then, for about fifty metres (in May 2026, and it’s not likely to be repaired any time soon given the extent of the damage), you have to walk along the PVC aqueduct pipe (about 200mm in diameter and very thick, so rigid) using a sidestep, with your hands against the wall.
This is clearly not a route for everyone, and justifies without a shadow of a doubt the closure of this section (the most spectacular).
This section of the route is closed up to the large footbridge (where you’ll need to climb over a chain barrier on the downstream side). Don’t take any risks; don’t be like those Sunday walkers seen on the pipe in unsuitable footwear. Don’t overestimate your abilities.
The rest of the route is very pleasant and magnificent. Finally, the very last section downstream between 4 and 5 has been altered because the original path running alongside the Rio has been washed away. So a path following a forest track and then minor roads allows you to get through. We did, however, take the closed section; it is very difficult and requires skills that we possessed.

A lovely walk to do outside the summer season. There may be no water left in the river, and it can get too busy in summer. Don’t hesitate to wade through the water if you come across any blocked sections.

Due to the rain, the riverside path along the Rio Monachil is closed and off-limits; we noticed this after the first suspension bridge, and those heading towards Monachil cannot access the riverside. We took a detour via the PR Circular de los Cahorros trail, marked in yellow, to reach Monachil.

A parish-specific to Brittany original trail with open areas and a passage through the gorges via suspension bridges, richers, caves, etc.: children love it. Make sure you wear suitable footwear and avoid rainy weather. This area is very popular with locals and tourists. We came across quite a few people on a Tuesday... avoid weekends, as it is difficult to pass other people on this particularly narrow path.
