Description of the walk

The starting point is located after the village of Gazost, at a place called La Scierie. To get there from Lourdes or Argelès, head towards Juncalas, pass the village and continue for 1.5 km. Turn right onto the D7 and continue for 3.5 km towards Cheust and Gazost. When you reach the small village of Gazost, continue along the D7 for 4 km. The road becomes increasingly narrow (thefirst section was rebuilt after being washed away by a mudslide in 2015) but the journey through this little-known and magnificent valley, dotted with small hamlets and surrounded by high mountains, is enchanting. Park in the open space at the end of the road.

(S/E) From the car park, take the wide path on the right that climbs up the left bank of the Pla de la Pène stream. Walk along this shady and often damp path until you reach a more open area, where the path crosses the stream (do not take the path that climbs to the right).

(1) Cross the stream (there is a small concrete bridge a few metres above the path) and climb up to the Gazost springs 150 m away.

(2) Arrive at the Bains de Gazost: this is actually the catchment of the "Hount Pudio" ("stinking fountain") spring. These sulphurous springs have been known since ancient times and today supply the thermal baths of Argelès-Gazost in the neighbouring valley (see explanations below).
Turn around and retrace your steps (do not continue past the baths as the path is private) and return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Worth a visit

The route allows you to discover the unspoilt Gazost valley and understand the history of this small Pyrenean village, which has always been subject to severe constraints (isolation, flooding, etc.).

The waters of the "Bains de Gazost" (Gazost Baths), which you will discover during the hike, have been collected since 1885 and brought by aqueduct to the neighbouring valley of Argelès (which did not have a single spring) to supply the spa. The sulphurous waters of the "Hount Pudio" (or "stinking fountain") spring actually contain chlorine, sodium and sulphur and have probably been used since Roman times. For centuries, the inhabitants of the region have used these waters for healing, but few foreigners come to the baths because of the distance and the poor state of the roads.

In 1868, a lawyer from Argelès, Hector Sassère, had the idea of buying these thermal springs, which enjoyed an excellent reputation, from the small village of Gazost and transporting the water via Lugagnan to the spa built in Argelès by means of a 21 km cast iron water pipe. As a result, in 1896, Argelès-de-Bigorre officially took the name Argelès-Gazost, which has been home to the spa park and casino ever since.

Not far from the car park are the ruins of an old sawmill, evidence that the Gazost valley was once a busy and productive place. This sawmill was part of a large hamlet comprising several buildings, which were destroyed by a severe flood in the 19th century. Only the sawmill survived, but it had already ceased operating by 1887.

More of a stroll than a hike, but a very refreshing one (especially in early October!).
The outward journey is completely straightforward, along the Pla de la Pène stream with its many small waterfalls, reminiscent of the Amazon, and the return journey is along a wide track dotted with hazelnut trees, ending at the imposing ruins of the old sawmill and the neighbouring hamlet (surprising, the small open-air chapel and its statue of the Virgin Mary in its niche).
My only regret is not having allowed enough time to continue the journey, either beyond the springs upstream of the track running along the side of the Crête des Campanes towards the Lhens hut, or, from point 3, the path on the right running alongside the Ruisseau de Hounteyde and climbing towards the Bois de Mesplède.
Future hiking projects...

We didn't follow the map but took the little path right next to it, but the description matched perfectly, so it's strange
Nice to do otherwise! Very damp

Easy hike. Shady path along a stream with numerous small waterfalls. Very pleasant hike.

A lovely little walk that can be extended by continuing the climb after the springs. The path is very wet but still pleasant.

Short hike in bad weather
Surely the valley and the stream are much more beautiful in the sunshine
Funny thing, on the way back down to Gazost there's a little hut where you can barter eggs.

A very beautiful hike. We did it in winter, but you can imagine that in summer the place is refreshing thanks to the waterfalls, and most of the hike is under the trees.
It's short and easy to do with young children, despite a few small slopes.
One slight disappointment: you can't touch the sulphurous springs, but you can smell sulphur in places.
