(S/E) Set off leaving Ornans behind you and, at the signpost, turn right onto the small road for about fifty paces, towards Roche Fournièche. At the corner of the cemetery wall, climb the hillside to the left via a narrow path (towards Rocher d’Ully). At the top of the wooden and stone steps, at the fork, turn left to reach the first viewpoint overlooking Ornans, the Château, the Roche du Mont and its Virgin, the Roche Botine, the Roche Lahier and the Loue Valley.
(1) Continue climbing along the narrow path that runs alongside the cliffs. At a bend, you’ll join a stony track which you follow for a few metres (towards Roche d’Ully) before leaving it immediately (N.B.) and rejoining a signposted path leading upwards through the forest.
After climbing a small rocky hillock, carry on straight ahead at the path junction. The markings have disappeared. You’ll come to a cleared area, no doubt due to the bark beetle, which is a sorry sight. The path turns 90° to the right. At the far end of the cleared area, climb the hillside again, turning sharply left along a path that isn’t all that easy to spot, but if you look up, you’ll see some rocks to guide you. At the foot of the rocks, climb the ladder. The path then runs alongside the cliffs and you’ll reach the Rocher d’Ully viewpoint.
(2) Turn your back on the viewpoint and set off again to the left along the path between the two benches. After about ten steps, you’ll come to a fork; take the left-hand path carefully along the unprotected cliffs (towards Ully), making sure to follow the signposts closely.
(3) You’ll come to a stony path; follow it uphill to the right. You’ll leave the woodland, cross some pastures and come to a small tarmac road; continue straight on towards Ully Farm. Shortly after the farm, turn right towards La Roche du Châtelet. After the small hut, at the fork, turn right, following the yellow-and-blue signposting and the VTT28 route.
(4) When the MTB route leaves this path and descends at right angles down a very steep slope to the left, carry on straight ahead, this time following only the yellow-and-blue markings.
(5) When the path begins to descend steeply, at a junction, look out for the Yellow Crosses on the right and the markings on a tree on the left, indicating you should turn left (towards Roche du Châtelet), leaving the descent behind. You’ll reach the unsecured viewpoint, then descend carefully using the handrails.
(6) At the bottom of the steps, turn left (towards Ornans), walking down between the barriers to enjoy the view of the town of Ornans once more and cross the Verger de Sauvegarde du Champ du Cerf. Head towards the viewing platform and go down one of the staircases, following the gravel path on the right to the Verger car park. Turn right towards the entrance to the nature trail. At the ‘Formation du Vallon’ sign, leave the ‘écureuil’ trail and head left up the gravel path which leads to a signpost; continue along the stony path opposite towards La Roche Fournièche and, at the next fork, head down to the left to return to the car park.
