The wild banks of the Rhône at the start of Challonges

This moderately difficult circular route will allow you to discover a particularly wild stretch of the Rhône. However, this part of the Rhône upstream from Seyssel has been affected by human activity due to the extraction of asphalt and Seyssel stone.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the village hall in Challonges.

(S/E) Cross the D14 and, at the "Challonges" sign, turn right onto Chemin de la Louise towards Buyet. Continue straight ahead at the various intersections on the tarmac road through the residential area until you reach the signpost for "Buyet".

(1) In Buyet, turn right down the hill towards Bois Millet. Cross the D14 and take the dirt track downhill. Further on, enter the forest. Take care as the descent is steep and can be slippery. Stay on the main track and follow the signposts carefully.

(2) At the bottom of the descent (Bois Millet), turn right towards Pont de Pyrimont. This section runs alongside the Rhône, which is below on the left.

(3) Join a small road and follow it to the right. You will soon come to the D31. Follow it to the left downhill towards Pont de Pyrimont.

(4) Follow the D72E and take the bridge over the Rhône. Ignore a road on the right and cross a stream. Pass under the railway bridge and you will soon reach the waterfall. Please note that the path to the Pain de Sucre waterfall can be slippery.

(5) Retrace your steps and cross the bridge over the Rhône again.

(4) At the end of the bridge, follow the road to the left. Pass the Comté cheese maturing cellars and continue along the road to the hamlet of Volland d'en haut.

(6) Turn right towards Challonges. Ignore a turn-off on the left and continue on to Volland d'en bas.

(7) Continue along a dirt track. On the way up, pass in front of the Chapelle de la Sainte chapel and note the view over the Rhône.

(8) At the end of the path, continue along a small road. Turn right, ignore a road on the left and walk alongside the cemetery. Continue straight ahead to the crossroads in the village centre. Then turn right to reach the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Pont de Pyrimont: monument composed of triangular metal side beams assembled in a lattice pattern.

Pain de Sucre waterfall: an imposing beige/brown tuff stalagmite 6 metres high.

The Comté de Pyrimont cellars are former Seyssel stone quarries. This is an enclave of the Comté AOP in the Haute-Savoie department.

We enjoyed this fairly easy hike. The waterfall is a lovely, cool spot in the shade of the trees, where it's nice to stop for a picnic halfway through the hike. There is a road in the second part of the hike, but that didn't bother us as there are few cars.

We did this hike in February after several days of rain. The Sugarloaf Mountain site was magnificent and we were the only hikers there. The trail was a bit muddy, which was to be expected after all the rain, but the waterfall was definitely worth seeing after the heavy rains. Access to the waterfall was very slippery, but very well secured by a handrail along the entire length of the stream.
There is a car park 100 metres from the site reserved for non-walkers, which was of no interest to us hikers.

A second part with the pleasant Rhône accommodation and then the highlight of the show, the Sugarloaf Waterfall with a picnic area nearby.
Very accessible for families.

An interesting route from point 2 (Millet Woods) to the Sugarloaf Waterfall, which can be completed in less than three hours. This is the only interesting part of the walk, as the rest is mainly along roads that, although not very busy, are ultimately rather tedious.

A beautiful walk culminating in the Pain de Sucre waterfall in the middle of its cirque. This unusual spot alone makes the walk worthwhile (even though it is possible to reach the waterfall by car). It's a great spot for a picnic, with the sun shining directly on the waterfall at midday. The route varies between fields and forest, crossing the wild Rhône via an unusual metal bridge (a bit like the bridge on the River Kwai...). Almost half of the route is on very small, quiet local roads (we only saw three cars at most on this Sunday morning), so it didn't bother us (on the contrary, during hunting season, it's actually quite reassuring...). Walking at a leisurely pace, it takes about two and a half hours. The water level must vary significantly; it was low at the end of September, but it was still very pretty.

Hello,

Quite disappointed with this hike. Too many paved roads. I suggest adding to the description under the heading "distance" that 8.99 km of the route is on tarmac roads. That would allow me to skip the ones with too much tarmac. More than half of this route was on hard roads, which was no fun! And we saw very little of the Rhône... Well, we did discover the Pain de Sucre site, which was the only real point of interest.

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback. We will pass on your comment to the town hall, but as you say, this is probably due to the health situation.

Toilets and water closed, contrary to what was announced!
This is undoubtedly due to COVID, but it is still a shame.
