Park at the exit of Sancey-le-Grand on the D31 towards Laviron, on the side of the road or at the start of the gravel path in the first bend. Good quality yellow-blue and yellow-red signposts.
(S/E) Take the gravel path that runs alongside the stream. Soon, when it turns sharply to the left, continue straight ahead on the path that continues to follow the Dard for a round trip to the source at the foot of some superb rocks (5 mins). Return to the gravel path and climb up to the right.
(1) Shortly afterwards, when the path enters the woods, look out for the steep path on the right (at the hiking signs) that takes you up the hillside and over the cliffs via a staircase. Follow the ledges of this magnificent rocky amphitheatre to the Dard viewpoint over the Val de Sancey.
(2) Return to the departmental road and cross it carefully (cars drive fast here) and continue on the small road opposite. The markings turn yellow and red. At the first fork, go left and climb for about 50 metres. Be careful! Look for a gap in the fence on your left, just opposite the new house, to enter the woods and continue along a small track.
(3) When you come out of the woods through a chicane, enter the pasture opposite through another chicane. Head towards the hedge to find the signposts. At the top of the pasture, turn around for a view of Belvoir Castle and Lomont, crowned with wind turbines that are too modern for my taste. Go through the fence at the right-hand corner and go up the small gravel road on the right, then cross the departmental road again.
(4) Go down the small road opposite towards Combe Georgot. Leave the farm on your left and continue straight ahead on the meadow path that quickly enters the woods. At the fork, take the left-hand gravel path that takes you through a sunny valley, skirting fir trees. It quickly becomes a meadow path and then gravel again. Continue along this path until you reach the pond in the hollow of a pretty valley.
(5) Leave the small tarmac road and descend to the left along the stony path that leads to the pond, where you will find the yellow and blue markings again. At the gate to the pond, turn right onto the grassy path between hedges and fences. Enter the pine forest via the path on the left. At the edge of the woods, follow the fence, noting the beautiful rocks on your right.
(6) At the edge of the woods, cross the fence via the chicane on the right and carefully descend this steep and picturesque path, which takes you into this wild valley, passing at the foot of a magnificent cliff. At the fork at the bottom, take the left-hand path (towards Le Dard - Sancey, loop no. 4), which will take you back to the intersection of the loop.
(1) Take the same route back to your vehicle (S/E).
The route includes cliff-side paths and unsecured viewpoints. The paths are rocky and slippery in places. Good walking shoes are essential and walking sticks are recommended.
between brambles and fencing, but it's fine.
