(S) This walk starts at the École Militaire metro station on line 8. On exiting, head towards the École Militaire, which is clearly visible to the south-west. Once you reach it, turn right onto the Champ de Mars (with the Eiffel Tower in your sights). The route follows one of the two main avenues. Cross Avenue Joseph Bouvard in two stages, then Avenue Gustave Eiffel.
(1) You will then arrive at the forecourt of the Eiffel Tower. Walk under the Eiffel Tower to reach the Quai Branly and cross it (the Trocadéro is opposite). Turn right to follow the Quai Branly.
(2) At the Pont de l’Alma, cross the avenue and continue along the same bank on the Quai d’Orsay. Walk as far as the Pont des Invalides, then the Pont Alexandre III. On your right, you will then see the Esplanade and the Church of Les Invalides.
(3) Take the Pont Alexandre III on your left to cross the Seine and carry on straight ahead. Walk between the Petit and the Grand Palais until you reach the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. Then turn right and walk down the Champs-Élysées to the Place de la Concorde.
(4) Cross the Place de la Concorde and don’t forget to turn round to see the Arc de Triomphe at the top of the Champs-Élysées. Head towards the Tuileries Gardens, passing behind the Ferris wheel. Carry on in the same direction, walking round the first pond and then the second. Climb the steps to leave the Tuileries Garden, pass under the Carrousel and head for the Place du Carrousel du Louvre.
(5) You are now partly surrounded by the Louvre Palace. The Louvre Pyramid is on the other side of the square. Turn right, pass under the arches and head towards the Quai François Mitterrand by turning left. Walk along the Seine side of the Louvre and carry on to the Pont-Neuf after passing the Pont des Arts.
(6) Take the Pont-Neuf on your right to reach the Île de la Cité. On your left, you’ll see the towers of the Conciergerie. Walk round the statue of Henry IV and head down the narrow alleyway opposite it, between the two buildings. You will then reach Place Dauphine. Leave the square on the right-hand side and head onto Quai des Orfèvres. Continue along Quai du Marché Neuf until you reach the forecourt of Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral.
(7) In front of the cathedral, turn right, then enter Square Jean XXIII. When you reach the back of the cathedral, head diagonally to your left and leave the square. Then cross the Pont Saint-Louis directly in front of you.
(8) You are now on Île Saint-Louis, which you cross quickly via Rue Jean du Bellay, heading to the right, and leave via the Pont Louis-Philippe. Once you have crossed the bridge, turn left and walk along the Seine. Continue until you reach the forecourt of the Hôtel de Ville, on your right. The Hôtel de Ville metro station (lines 1 and 11), which marks the end of the walk, is located opposite the forecourt (E).
Even though we knew all this, it was a wonderful day. We added a tour of Paris's culinary delights and made a detour to climb the Arc de Triomphe on this beautiful sunny day. We also went down into the Louvre pyramid. A very nice tour, thank you.
