The snows of Mont Mézenc

The hike starts at the forest house car park and climbs through the powder snow of Mont Mézenc. From the summit, your efforts are rewarded with a magnificent view of the village of Les Estables below and Mont Alambre. And even the Alps, if the weather is clear.

Description of the walk

The walk starts from the car park at the forest house.

(S/E) With your snowshoes on, head east towards Mont Mézenc.

(1) Facing the forest, turn right and follow the edge (GR® markings).

(2) You probably won't see it if there is snow, but this is the source of the Gazeille.

(3) Before reaching the road, turn left into a wide clearing in the forest to reach the Croix de Boutière car park.

(4) Turn left onto the path leading to the restaurant. There, quickly turn left onto a path that enters the woods and winds its way through. At the exit, follow the trail climbing towards the north summit and reach the cross.

(5). From there, all you have to do is enjoy the view. Descend southwards, passing between the two summits.

(6) Then follow the ridge line to the orientation table at the southern summit (located in Ardèche). Your efforts will be rewarded with a magnificent view of the village of Les Estables below and Mont Alambre.

(7) Descend in the opposite direction to this viewpoint to a second orientation table from which you can enjoy the view of the Alps on a clear day.

(8) Then head towards the northern summit topped by a cross.

(6) Turn left and begin the descent into the wide saddle separating the two summits. Enter the forest, taking care to follow the path to the right of the signpost. At the Peccata cross, turn left and follow the road. Return to the starting point by taking the most direct route back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

-> Snowshoes can be hired by the day from one of three shops in the village of Les Estables that offer this service. All three are close to the starting point of the hike:
- Phonolithe (ski, snowshoe and sledge hire).
- Michel Sports (ski and snowshoe hire) located near the Vival grocery store.
- 3 Kite (kite surfing and snowshoe hire/sales) near the Les 3 Monts restaurant.

-> Due to the altitude and bad weather, it can be very cold at the summit, especially as it is often windy. Wrap up warm and don't forget to bring gloves, warm socks and a hat to protect your extremities.

-> Walking with snowshoes requires more effort than hiking in summer. You also need to manage the time allocated for the route, as the days are short in winter.

-> After braving the elements, you can take refuge in the warmth of a bar in the village of Les Estables for a hot drink. What a comfort for frozen extremities!

Worth a visit

- The family-friendly resort of Les Estables is ideal for downhill skiing on the slopes of Mont Alambre. For beginners, the bottom of the slopes offer facilities suitable for learning to ski (t-bar lifts and baby skis).

- Numerous Nordic ski trails starting from the Maison Forestière car park

- Before reaching the Col des Boutières, the snow-kite area

Not everyone completes the entire route, but many people staying at the hostel also climb to the top.
Do it early in the morning to enjoy the breathtaking 360° view.
The abundant snow adds to the magical feeling of this hike.

A very pleasant snowshoe hike in beautiful sunshine. Be aware that it is windy in open areas, especially at the summit of Mézenc. Dress warmly in winter, follow the directions carefully, and everything will be fine.

A magnificent snowshoe hike on a beautiful sunny day. The view of the Alps from Mézenc is splendid. We did the route backwards to get straight to the mountain. The snow had been compacted by other hikers, making snowshoes almost useless. Studded soles would have been sufficient and easier, especially in the woods near Boudières with the rocks and roots on the trail.
The car park is full at weekends.

Hike completed today. Very foggy weather, so the view from the top remained theoretical!!! The route is well described, no problems!
