Description of the walk

At the junction of the D929 road from Lannemezan via Saint-Lary-Soulan and the Lac de l'Oule road, you will find a small car park which is the starting point.

(S/E) Take the dirt road that branches off to the right, running alongside the Neste Valley, then quickly winds its way up to the dam.

(1) 350 metres from the dam, leave the road and turn left onto a beautiful path that will take you to the left of the dam. Continue straight on this path, which runs along the left bank of Lac de l'Oule, until you reach the first hut (Cabane de l'Oule). Continue to the right, cross a small bridge and you will reach a second hut (Cabane de la Lude - 1,816m).

(2) Behind this hut, take the path on the left. Climb this path, keeping left at each intersection and following the Port-Bielh stream until you reach a shelter of the same name on the banks of Laquet de Coste Oueillère (2105m).

(3) Continue climbing along the path to the right of the Port-Bielh shelter, keeping to the right until you reach a shelter at the Laquets de Port-Bielh (2,217 m).

(4) Take the path that starts furthest to the right of the shelter under one of the lakes. It will take you to the two Lacs de Bastanet (2,193m).

(5) At the second lake, continue climbing slightly for 800m until you reach the heights of Lac Supérieur de Bastan (2260m). Turn right and keep right at the next two junctions to reach the Bastan refuge (2223m).

(6) Leave the refuge on your left and continue along the slightly descending path, passing between the Middle Bastan Lakes (2210m). Continue descending to the last two small lakes and go around them on the left (2188m).

(7) Continue along the gently descending path, keeping to the right until you reach a fork at Lac Inférieur de Bastan (2105m).

(8) Keep to the right and walk along the lake. Continue downhill, keeping to the right at each fork and passing under the Bastan hut (2000m) on your right, until you reach a crossroads.

(9) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead and join the right bank of Lac de l'Oule.

(10) Turn left and follow the lake until you pass under the Lac chairlift, then turn right towards the refuge chalet.

(11) Pass to the left of the Chalet-Refuge de l'Oule and take the road that descends under the dam. You will return to the intersection you passed at the start of the hike.

(1) Follow the road to the car park (S/E).

A magnificent route, busy without being crowded. A long journey, but without any particular concerns. An excellent memory. Highly recommended!

A very beautiful hike completed in 7 hours and 45 minutes, including breaks.
Be careful at point 2, which we missed at first (we walked 200 metres before turning back). It is essential to pay close attention to the GPS route on your smartphone at this point, as the fork is not at all obvious. And you need to remain vigilant for about 500 metres, as it is not always easy to find your bearings at the beginning.
There are very few hikers in this direction and almost no one after point 2. However, there are many people in the opposite direction from the Bastan refuge.

A very beautiful hike around all the lakes, especially Bastan Lake in the middle, but there are two major flaws in this suggested route (which absolutely must be corrected).
The climb after L'Oule towards Port Bielh is very poorly signposted. Use the GPX file!
First correction: You have to climb up to Port Bielh for the view of all the lower lakes. There is a hill you have to climb for the view just before going up to Port Bielh. This adds 30 minutes to the round trip.
2nd correction: do not take the shortcut between points 9 and 10, which is equivalent to a red/black ski run (otherwise use walking poles as we did). At point 9, continue down the GR to the end of Lake Oule opposite the dam, then return via the path along the lake.

The route is well described, but the terrain is completely marked out as you often follow the GR 10 trail and there are also signposts to guide you. Very busy.

The hike and the scenery are magnificent, the lakes are superb and you can swim in them. The only downside is that the trail markings are often non-existent or poorly indicated, but fortunately the trail on our phone put us back on the right track (another person doing the same hike with the same app made the same mistakes).
The passage between 9 and 10 is not recommended (steep slope and not visible); it is better to continue to the right and then continue along the lake.

A hike with magnificent lakes that I have fond memories of. I did it in the opposite direction, though.

A few issues with this hike
The Oule dam was under construction, and the entrance on the left side was blocked, so I went up on the right side, which had no impact
After point 2, the Lude hut, you do indeed have to turn left, crossing a small bridge to go up the path to the left of the stream
But, having been burned on another hike where the trail disappeared, and seeing no signs for the recommended trail, I feared the same misadventure and I turned right at a sign for Port Bielh, which I knew was at the end of the route, and which ultimately took me to the Bastan refuge, which I should have taken on the way back (I planned to do it in two stages, otherwise it would have been too much for my partner).
I could see the recommended trail on the other side, and I could have taken it without any problem, which was a shame.
But in the end, it wasn't so bad. We climbed up to the refuge in the morning, had lunch there, then pushed on to Port-Bielh and back in the afternoon. It was a very nice walk.
We spent the night at the refuge, which was lovely, and returned the next day.
The little lakes are very pretty, and swimming is very popular there.
If I do it again on my own, I'll do it properly next time.
Thank you for this route.

The landscapes are simply magnificent, despite rather overcast and foggy weather down below that day...
This valley is definitely worth a visit!
