The hamlets of the Adret d'Aiguilles

A circular hike starting from Aiguilles and passing through Chalvet, Le Lombard, Les Eygliers and La Pause. Normally classified as moderate, but difficult due to:
- the uneven distribution of elevation gain: fairly steep climb from the start, almost flat for 7 km, steep descent,
- two small, almost flat sections where the path is poorly marked,
- a steep section protected by a handrail that is impractical in snow or frost and impossible for a donkey, even without a pack. A dog off the leash can pass through easily.

Description of the walk

Park in the Lombard car park in Aiguilles (near the small inn).

(S/E) Walk up Rue du Four Banal, then Rue du Serre to the church. Walk behind the church, then follow the yellow markings to the cross above the village.

(1) Follow the path to the left until you reach the tarmac road. Continue climbing along the road through the Condamine district. At the end of this road, you will reach a fountain.

(2) Continue along a narrower path, which is still well marked. You will reach another crossroads with information panels about the animals that live in the mountains (roe deer, marmots, chamois and squirrels).

(3) Turn right and follow a steep climb to reach the ruins of Chalvet.

(4) Turn left at a 90° angle. Please note: the cross marked on the map no longer exists. Continue along a virtually flat section of this poorly marked path to reach the edge of the larch forest (elevation 1,828 metres).

(5) Take the 4x4 track on the right, climb through the mountain pasture to the hairpin bend.

(6) Continue to the right. Please note: the path to follow is barely visible. You will need to descend slightly into the clearing and look for the trace of an old canal. You will reach a steep passage on a steep slope.

(7) Continue along the handrail for about 200 metres, then the going gets easier.

(8) Follow this almost horizontal track to the Torrent du Lombard.

(9) Ford the stream and descend to reach the hamlet of Lombard.

(10) Take the track opposite and follow it to a hairpin bend where the tracks meet.

(11) Take the left-hand track, continue uphill and arrive at the crossroads by the cistern near the Bergerie du Lombard.

(12) Turn right downhill and head for the oratory in the hamlet of Les Eygliers and the GR®58.

(13) Continue downhill on the GR®, which is quite steep but not difficult. You will reach the hamlet of La Pause.

(14) Cross the track and continue downhill on the path that leads straight to the village. Reach the Lombard car park (S/E).

Notes

(1) There is a bench where you can rest after the first 50 metres of elevation gain and realise that it will continue to climb like this for about 2 hours.
(10) Hameau du Lombard: you are now halfway through the hike. The fountain flows all year round. The chapel is locked, but there is a small forecourt where you can have a snack.
(S/E) Bridge before the finish: in winter, you can watch people learning to ice climb here.
As with any hike in the lower alpine pastures, please avoid late June/early July and September so as not to disturb the herd and the shepherds.
Fountains at Aiguilles (start) and Lombard (halfway point) in all seasons.

Worth a visit

(S/E) Aiguilles: visit the Maison du Queyras (tourist office) and take part in a fun treasure hunt accessible to all, lasting around 45 minutes (departure from the town hall). There is also an exhibition in the back room of the Aiguilles library which traces the history of the hamlets along this hike.

Thank you so much for this walk. A lovely circular route where cultural heritage meets adventure.
Do be careful not to underestimate the steep section between points 7 and 8, though. You need sure-footedness and a head for heights; otherwise, you’ll have to turn back. Of course, there are a few handrails, but there’s also a drop-off. I can confirm that this section should only be tackled in good weather, particularly when it’s dry. Thank you, and happy hiking to all.
