The Auchaise and Auphèle embankments

A short walk that takes you up to a slight elevation as you pass through the hamlet of Auchaise, with its traditional houses, before descending to the lakeside, crossing its two embankments, and then heading down to the foot of the dam on the Maulde.

Description of the walk

From the D233/D3a1 between Auphelle and Royère, shortly after entering the department of Creuse and just before the first embankment (the Auphelle embankment), a semi-circular side track branches off to the left, where you can leave your vehicles (there is another parking area just after this on the right).

(S/E) Continue along this slip road and, just before rejoining the main road, turn left onto a path through the woodland marked in yellow and signposted ‘Circuit des Deux Digue’ (longer than the route suggested here).

(1) Cross the Pont du Châtaignoux bridge over the Maulde and continue through the woodland. You’ll reach the few houses in the hamlet of Châtaignoux.

(2) After the last house, take a path to the right. It is lined with a few fine oak trees. Further on, walk along the edge of a field; on the field side, pass a water intake, go through a gate and you’ll reach a small road.

(3) Leave the yellow markings and follow the road to the right to reach the hamlet of Aucaise. To see several houses, turn right onto the Allée d’Auchaise, then right again at the next junction.

(4) When you reach the “main street” again, walk a few steps to the left to join the yellow and blue signposted path, to the left of an abandoned house. Further down, you’ll reach the D3a1 road.

(5) Follow it to the right, on the pavement, along the Digue d’Auchaise.

(6) At the end of this first dyke, take the path on the left, marked in yellow and blue. When you reach the cluster of huts, head towards the gate, then rejoin the road, making sure to follow the markings carefully.

(7) Turn left onto the Digue d’Auphèle (or Auphelle), walking on the pavement – that is, on the right-hand side of the road – which offers a view of the dam’s structures. At the end of the dyke, a path leads down to the foot of the dam, where its waters flow into the Maulde.

(8) Head back up to the road by the same route. Cross the road and take the semi-circular path, marked in yellow and blue, opposite. Return to the road and cross it to get back to where you parked (S/E).
