Les deux Ventrons au départ du Col d'Oderen

The route takes you through a beautiful forest with a variety of tree species and alpine pastures. On a clear day, there are beautiful views of the Bernese Alps from the summit of Grand Ventron and Tête du Chat Sauvage.
Ideal route in hot weather... but also in mixed weather as the trees provide some protection from the rain.

Description of the walk

Departure from the car park at Col d'Oderen.

(S/E) Cross the road, leave theGR®®531(marked with a blue rectangle, the return route) on your left and take the path on the right at the boundary marker between the Haut-Rhin and Vosges departments (Ancien Sentier des Douaniers). This fairly steep path continues for about 1 km, running along the former French-German border (which you will encounter several times during the hike). See Practical Information. It joins theGR®®531and a path marked with a blue triangle.

(1) After passing through a fence (always make sure you close it behind you to prevent animals from escaping), take the path (marked with a blue triangle) that branches off to the right towards the Ferme-Auberge du Felzach (or Felsach). Walk past the Ferme-Auberge buildings.

(2) After the barn, take the path that descends to the right (Blue Triangle). Further on, pass under an old abandoned ski lift, then arrive at the top of an alpine pasture. Begin the descent, with a view of the town of Kruth. On your left, at the edge of the forest, you will see two small buildings, the Frentzbergel. Take the path on the left that leads there.

(3) At Frentzelbergel, the path is crossed by an electric fence. Turn right and stay on the marked trail, which joins a forest path.

(4) Ignore the forest path that descends and take the one on the left (marked with a red ring). After a left turn, at the crossroads, ignore the path marked with a blue ring and continue straight ahead for a few kilometres. After crossing a path marked with a yellow disc, continue to a crossroads with a clearing and a picnic table on the left under the trees (you can't miss it).

(5) At this crossroads, leave the Anneau Rouge markings, take the path that climbs to the left and follow it to the junction with a path marked with a yellow cross.

(6) At this point, leave the path, which becomes a trail, and climb up the trail on the left (Yellow Cross) to Petit Ventron.

(7) At Petit Ventron, take theGR®® 531 on the right (blue rectangle) towards Grand Ventron, cross afirst mountain pasture, and at thesecond mountain pasture, you will arrive at a junction.

(8) Take theGR®® variant on the left, marked by a blue-white-blue rectangle, until you reach a small, quiet tarmac road. Take this road on the right and pass in front of the Auberge de la Chaume du Grand Ventron (unfortunately closed and currently for sale).

(9) At the Auberge de la Chaume du Grand Ventron, take the path and pass in front of the Alpine Club chalet (marked with a blue disc and yellow triangle) until you reach the Grand Ventron orientation table.

(10) After admiring the landscape at the summit of Grand Ventron, continue on theGR®®531, passing the mountain pasture you encountered earlier and then Petit Ventron (7).

(11) At Tête du Chat Sauvage, on a clear day you will have a beautiful view of the Bernese Alps. Continue southwards until you reach the large crossroads at Chaume du Vintergé with its shelter.

(12) The Chaume des Vintergés shelter (here too, you can picnic in the shelter in case of rain). Continue south on theGR®® towards Haut de Felzach.

(13) Leave the forest at Haut de Felzach and descend to the small car park located 300 m from the Felzach farmhouse inn.

(14) At the small car park by the farm, cross the access road to the farm and continue opposite, still on theGR®®531. At the crossroads, ignore the path you took on the way there and continue to the Col d'Oderen (S/E).

Please note: the Chaume du Grand Ventron inn is currently closed. It has been bought and is undergoing renovation – scheduled to open in summer 2027.

(4) Picnic table.

(10) Mereuille shelter: inside there are several tables and benches where you can eat sheltered from the rain, wind or cold. Please leave the place clean after your visit and take all your rubbish with you.

(12) Two shelters along the trail for picnicking in the shelter in case of bad weather or cold weather.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

You can eat or have a snack at the Felzach farmhouse inn. It is open from April to 11 November. Closed in winter. It is best to book in advance if you want to eat there at lunchtime or in the evening at the end of your hike... not necessary for a snack!

After a kilometre, we had lunch at the Felsach farmhouse inn, which I recommend. We then continued along the route but cut it short by turning left onto a path marked with yellow circles just before point 5 on the route. This uphill path leads directly to Chaume des Vintergés and shortens the route by about 10 km. Be careful at point 3, "Frentzelbergel", to follow the instructions carefully (we had a bit of trouble...).

Very beautiful route. Unfortunately, no views of Switzerland today, too much fog in the distance.
We didn't do the circular route north of Grand Ventron, but instead descended directly from the summit to the inn and climbed back up to Petit Ventron via the path marked with green-white-green rectangles 100 metres south of the inn.
Three comments: At point 3: the marked route (blue triangle) no longer passes through Frentzelbergel but turns left a little further down on the main track, which is a good solution to avoid the very muddy section of Frentzelbergel.
At point 6, contrary to the description, the path does not become a trail but continues as a wide track.
The Auberge du Grand Ventron is closed for renovation and is scheduled to reopen in 2026.

A beautiful parish-specific to Brittany hike through the woods with magnificent views. Don't hesitate to try it; it's not very difficult. Be careful after the large ventron towards the inn not to go down the road on the right, as the path to go back up is closed (classified as a quiet zone with no access). From the inn, take the road on the left and follow the blue and white markings which, 100 m further down on your left, will take you back to the small ventron.

Hike completed on 12/11/2022 during a temperature inversion (sunshine in the mountains, fog below), but starting from Frenz, which doesn't change much, as the blue triangle trail allows you to join the circular. A few comments:
- on a clear day, you can see the Alps for much of the route, which is magnificent
The circular on the Grand Ventron side can be shortened to avoid a section of tarmac (descend directly from the summit to the inn).
- As is often the case in the Thur Valley, forestry vehicles use the trails, grrr!

A trail run on a beautiful autumn Sunday – what a treat! Varied and enjoyable trails through forests and mountain pastures. Most of the route was on forest paths, which was fine for running. I never got bored. Bliss at the summit of Grand Ventron, with a beautiful view of the Alps as a reward!

The route covered 16.90 km / 879 m elevation gain in 2½ hours, including breaks.

Thank you for this beautiful route, I think I'll keep it in mind and do it again sometime!

A very beautiful hike with lovely views and varied environments, with some snowfields still remaining in mid-April. No major technical difficulties, just a few challenging climbs and a slightly steep descent after the Tête du Chat Sauvage. We didn't take the path that runs alongside the Mereuille shelter because a banner warning us not to disturb the wildlife blocked our way. We turned back and walked past the Chaume refuge (CAF). I don't know when these banners will be removed.

Thanks to the Visorandonneur who created this beautiful hike.

A beautiful route with numerous viewpoints, passing through forests with a variety of tree species and across stubble fields. I can confirm that it is classified as difficult, particularly the climb to Petit Ventron via the yellow cross trail (average gradient 16% with sections exceeding 25%). The two climbs at the end of the route to reach the Tête du Chat Sauvage and the Haut de Felzach are also quite challenging .
I met about thirty hikers.
Personally, I would do this route again, but in the opposite direction, as it seems easier (even though the elevation gain is the same, the slopes seem less aggressive).
